Conventional wisdom claims the aphorism, “You can’t polish a turd,” came from sailors who were given an impossible task of trying to shine something that was dull and slippery. Someone needs to get word to General Milley about this truth. Milley, along with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, engaged in some world class “turd” polishing today (Thursday) as they briefed reporters on the results of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Brussels.
The problem with the NATO plan for Ukraine’s faltering offensive is encapsulated in the following quote (it starts at the 8:51 mark in the video below):
More than six thousand Ukrainians are being trained right now at 40 different locations (sic) training locations in 65 courses in 33 Nations on three continents. That is all happening right now today
Let me give you some facts. If you join the U.S. Army and want to learn to crew a M1 Abram tank, you are looking at a minimum of 6 months training. And that is just learning how drive the tank and fire shells. But that is only the beginning. Soldiers are not given their own personal tank to tool around the base. Once a soldier and his crew learn how to start, steer, shoot and stop, the team must then learn how to operate in a coordinated fashion with a company (150 soldiers ), a battalion (800 to 1000 soldiers), a brigade (5000 soldiers) and a Division (10,000 to 15,000 soldiers).
Instruction starts with the simple and proceeds to the complex. Effectively operating a tank as part of a Division is the most complicated task and mission. Guess what? To learn to do this requires at least two years of training. There are no shortcuts. I spoke the other day with a young Army Captain who remarked how difficult it was to train U.S. troops to carry out brigade level tank maneuvers even after two years of training.
With that as background do you now appreciate the stupidity of Milley’s comment? The Ukrainians are not being taken to one location in one country and asked to master two or three courses of instruction. Nope. They are in 40 different locations in 33 different countries and 6000 Ukrainian troops are being fed a firehose of 65 courses. Do the math. That works out to about 93 soldiers per course. And the instructors most likely do not speak Ukrainian, so the soldiers are getting translated lessons in English, French, German, Polish and Italian. This is a veritable tower of Babel.
So let’s entertain the assumption that these 6000 souls are really fast learners and magically complete the training. How do you integrate 6000 soldiers that have been in 33 countries and being trained to different standards? Short answer — you don’t. It is impossible.
But then consider this. During just one week of combat against Russian forces, the Ukrainians lost 7500 men (killed and wounded). All of those trained soldiers erased in the flash of an artillery shell, a mortar or a glide bomb. Again, do the math. If Ukraine is losing 6000 men a week, then the training pipeline better have at least 80,000 Ukrainians attending these courses. Otherwise, NATO training cannot keep pace with Ukrainian casualties.
What we are witnessing is military malpractice on a colossal scale. I find it hard to believe that Milley, Austin and their NATO compatriots are really this stupid in touting this training regimen as something responsible and wise. It is madness. The cynical part of me believes that Ukraine is just being used as a pretext to juice the Western defense industries. After years of neglect and outsourcing, the U.S. and its NATO partners have discovered that they no longer have the factories and materials necessary to supply an industrial scale war.
The hard truth it this — Ukraine does not have the manpower and NATO does not have the luxury of time required to ensure the Ukrainian soldiers have minimal levels of competence in the military arts they are trying to learn in a veritable crash course. Keep this in mind as Russian grinds the Ukrainian Army into dust. All of that money for training men whose life expectancy is counted in weeks, if not days. Who will be held accountable?

Now, it makes sense why the 300K Russian soldiers mobilized last fall, didn’t see the front line, yet. They are still in training after 6-9 months, and they came with some previous military training/experience. Despite of this, they are being used only in the supporting roles. away from the front line. I’ve read somewhere that, recently, Russians started exposing that contingent to the roles close to the real front. Why so long, because it takes that long, and you can’t reset lives, after each lost game.

My thought is they are training for a large offensive. They may train up to 2 years while the defensive groups just grind on the UKRO troops.

Katyusha rockets were indeed named after song. Maybe because it’s sound reminded them of the song, maybe not. It is not uncomon for Russians to give affectionate diminutive names to weapons. DShK heavy machine gun has a nickname Dushka (a dear one, a sweetheart, or something along those lines, also a Slavic female name), and PPSh-41 submachine gun is Papasha (daddy).

It also appears to me that on flat ground without the all the trenches, fortifications, and even underground tunnels as we have seen in Bakhmut and Soledar, the Ukrainians are no match for the fortified Russian forces in the regions stretching from Kherson to Marinka.
I think Russian forces have also mastered their tank and armoured vehicle elimination skills and now have many ways to achieve very effective results.
The Kamikaze attacks continue, but sadly many young Ukrainian men are forced into battle under the duress that if they don’t attack, even if their own men fall and need assistance, their own forces will make sure they keep advancing. Did not see any mention of maintenance. The M1 has a tremendous periodic maintenance requirement that has to be done with TRAINED personnel.
It also consumes a huge amount of fuel- thus a long logistical train, which has its own vulnerability.
Banzai attacks make all vehicles low maintanance. Huge amount of fuel is not required, it only makes fires bigger.
If you have some experience with military life, maybe because you had to serve as a grenadier in the army, you understand two points:
1. People who never ever had been in the army have zero understanding how it will work. They expect war is heroes running around with firearms.
2. 30 percent of my former colleagues in the army openly told me that they would not go to war. The remaining 70 percent were either too shy to tell or too stupid to understand the war.
So, don’t expect the population to protest against war. It is pure Darwinism: they are either to stupid or to shy and thus will be killed.

30 percent of soldiers died because of the bullets that incidentally hit them from behind, coming from their fellows who simply shot at whatever they could see. Stress means you will forget all you had learned.
In my organization, there was a Boss, who was very arrogant and thought very highly of his own judgement. In meetings, he would outline his plans and expect his senior staff to work on them. Many competent fellows tried to argue that his plans were based in incorrect data and assumptions. They would be browbeaten, berated and sidelined. Everybody then got the message. They started acting on the Boss’s suggestions knowing full well that the end results would be disastrous. But then they would justify saying “orders are orders” and it is not up to them to judge their Boss. The fault, if any, would be that of the Boss’s boss.
The situation with Miley and Austin looks similar. They have been given orders to do something, based on incorrect data and assumptions. They know what happens to people who criticize their bosses. They will simply shrug and say “orders are orders”. Ultimately, the responsibility has to be placed somewhere. It will turn out that the responsibility of the seemingly illogical actions of Miley and Austin would be passed on to the electorate of USA, who elected Joe Biden, who gave orders to Miley and Austin “to do something, anything” who the gave orders to polish the turd.

Last Decemeber I was in Venice and walking around St Marks square were three very nice looking people, a man and two women. They were taking turns with photos two at a time. As usual I offered to take the thre of them together.
He smiled at me and thanked me and he sounded Russian. I asked if he was and he almost sheepishly said yes, I shook his hand and told him how much I loved Russian art culture and
music.
Meanwhile on the women wandered off, the guy tried to call her for the photo but she didn’t hear him. All of a sudden he sings out a verse from an opera in the most sweet and beautiful tenor I have ever heard.
The woman heard him from maybe 30 yards away and came running back. I took their pictures and we chatted for maybe 15 minutes. They were professional singers in holiday after performing in Rome.
It was a wonderful interlude and a nice contrast to the typical arrogant Brit or American tourists always trying to break the line to go in or ride a gondola.
BTW the two women were jaw dropping gorgeous.

Oh, those beautiful Russian songs Katyusha and Poljuskha Polje, I have always loved them, but best of all in the performance of the Russian Army Choir by the Alexandrov group and especially when Kharitonov was the soloist.
