Kupchan’s views are not unique to him. What he is saying about Russia and Ukraine is mainstream Neo-Con and reflects the views of Biden’s key national security aides and the leaders of the U.S. Senate and House. Most of these battalions have suffered more than 70% casualties just aganist PMC Wagner.
The twenty five brigades listed above represents a force of at least 50,000 men (assuming only 2000 men in a reduced brigade) and as many as 125,000. Simplicius also lists at least 9 battalions and 5 regiments — that is 4500 and 5000 additional troops respectively. Do the math. If Ukraine deployed 134,500 troops to the battle for Bakhmut, 70% casualties means that Ukraine suffered as many as 94,150 killed and wounded.
Kupchan, in my view, is a precise barometer of the philosophical and political ideology directing U.S. policy towards Russia and Ukraine. These people — e.g., Sullivan, Blinken, Nuland and Kupchan — really believe that Russia is an impoverished, ravaged nation barely hanging on and nothing yet has shaken them of that belief. They are convinced that if Ukraine can pull off a military miracle that Russia will collapse. This mindset is not only crazy, it is dangerous. It grossly underestimates Russia’s capability and determination to achieve its stated goals of demilitarizing and de-nazifying Ukraine and rests heavily on the false assumption that Russia does not have the economic power to sustain its military effort.
I do recommend you read the latest from Simplicius the Thinker. It is behind a pay wall. He offers a fascinating, detailed analysis of the next steps in the war. I believe that Simplicius is not the sole author of the excellent pieces posted at his Substack. I believe he is a conduit for providing the view of Russian military intelligence about the state of play in the war Russia is waging in Ukraine. He is getting help from knowledgeable folks on the Russian side. Please do not misinterpret what I am trying to convey — I am not accusing Simplicius of being a Russian stooge. Far from it. I think he represents a rather sophisticated information operation designed to try to communicate with the West the reality of what Ukraine faces in this war.
Simplicius is a clever vehicle for getting information to the public that is not covered with the taint of a Russian Ministry of Defense briefing. I am not suggesting that the Russian MOD is lying. Just pointing out the the establishment West routinely rejects anything the MOD provides. Simplicius, as a Substac author, is not an immediate lightning rod and his well reasoned pieces appear to be having the intended effect of educating people in the West about what is really going on and what may happen. I realize that some, like Charles Kupchan, immediately reject what Simplicius is presenting by labeling it as “Russian propaganda.” Simplicius, in my view, is not a propagandist or a spin artist.
Let me take one telling example from his latest work. He comments on the reported ambush of two Russian combat aircraft and two helicopters last week. The initial public reaction credited Ukraine with a daring operation that caught the Russians with their pants down. But Simplicius now presents a credible case that the Russians themselves shot down these aircraft.
Some might argue, they recently blasted an entire Russian ‘special air group’ near Bryansk. But to be honest, the more time goes by, the more I’m personally leaning towards the explanation that that air group was destroyed by friendly fire. The prominent Russian ‘FighterBomber’ channel seems to agree, stating that Russian IFF (Identify Friend Foe) systems have known problems, and it would explain a lot of very untenable anomalies of the shoot down; like why the EW choppers did not appear to be engaging the threat at all with their automated systems which disperse flares/chaff and why they wouldn’t have been able to jam the system in question to begin with, as is their role. Keep in mind, Ukraine itself denied that they were responsible for this shoot down, officially, though that’s not necessarily saying much.
It’s simply too improbable, and they have no real systems that can reach that far into Russian space, have never done it before or since. So personally, my senses tell me that was a catastrophic case of blue on blue. Wouldn’t be the first or last time—most of the shoot downs of Russian Su-34s over Donetsk last year were confirmed to have been by friendly fire. And most shoot downs in general throughout history are friendly fire, which includes the majority of NATO/U.S. shoot downs in the various conflicts like Desert Storm, etc. It’s a simple reality of air operations.
Whether Simplicius is producing all of these excellent pieces on his own or is getting help from Russian military intelligence is irrelevant because the quality of what is written stands on its own and is worth reading, which means you ought to consider subscribing to his Substack. Sadly, people like Charles Kupchan prefer to wallow in the filth of ignorance and blindly embrace suicidal policies that will do more to harm the United States than Russia.
‼️ I’ve just listened to this interview with John Helmer, who is convinced NATO is planning an ambush attack against Russia as soon as June 12th, under the guise of long-planned NATO exercises in Germany, Poland, and Romania.
Helmer believes this “ambush attack” will incorporate a full complement of top-shelf US air assets, including F-22s and F-35s.
While I do not categorically dismiss the possibility of such an astounding move by the US and its NATO vassals, I consider it effectively impossible. It is, in my judgment, an unthinkable and assuredly catastrophic escalation to no-holds-barred World War 3.
So, I suppose we must all “wait and see”, but I remain highly dubious that the #EmpireAtAllCosts cult has sufficiently seized the reins of American military power that it could bring to pass an act of such unmitigated madness.

Consider those Jan 6 protesters who are still being held without charge. They took legal protest action against what they perceived rightly or wrongly to be a rigged election. I read John Helmer. He has very detailed post-analysis of major events with interesting details involving Western interventions and covert actions against Russian geopolitical interests directly and within its sphere of influence. However, it seems mostly open sourced and lacking in discernable inside contacts within the military, intelligence, or the inner upper leadership echelons of the Putin-led bureaucracy. He also is adamantly, obsessively anti-West to a degree that compromises the relative objectivity of his work in general, despite the accuracy of specific details at times.
As for his strategic and tactical prognostications, one might be wise to salt to taste.
He has done some good work on the City of London. I don’t have to tell you that it is safe to be a bit wary but he can write.

Just recently i’ve read a Russian article, claiming that something similar almost happened in 1983. Soviets were expecting upcoming Able Archer NATO exercises to be a preparation for an invasion.
This source claims that they’ve already positioned advanced forces in NATO countries prepared to sabotage/destroy NATO nuclear installations, which weren’t as numerous, since Perhsing 2 was not deployed yet and the only long-range continental missile was a land-based Tomahawk variant.
Same source claims that the arrival of batleship New Jersey, recently outfitted with nuclear missiles, to the Mediterranean, which Soviets had no way to assure destruction of, as they had no subs at the region at this exact moment, forced them to consider peace talks.

Today we got the confirmation about the fate of Zaluzhny…they weren’t just rumors, he was hit by a missile strike and he’s in critical condition in Kiev. That’s why he wasn’t seen on video for the last couple weeks. He’s not dead though (yet)

I tend to think he is closer to a genius. There is a fellow on Russian TV, who I believe goes by the name of Dmitri Abzalov, and appears almost daily with mountains of figures, statistics and analyses seemingly off the top of his head. It is obvious he is highly intelligent and well-read (and possibly with Russian intelligence connections). When he talks, everyone just remain quiet and extremely attentive – not many argue with him. There are people like this in the world. I believe Simplicius is one of them.

I have read a good number of works by Simplicius, and my gut tells me that, if he doesn’t write each piece, he at least edits the input from others. His writing style is consistent across all of the articles (though I haven’t done an exhaustive analysis), including darkfutura material. I also get the impression (not conclusive) that if English is not his first language, then he at least has spent a lot of time with the English language (American, not British), maybe living in the states.
I agree with that, but don’t think he has access to any insider info (from Russian military intelligence or whoever). Open source intelligence is nowdays extremely useful. All kinds of stuff can be found of Telegram, especially in Russian. The “telling example” even mentions FighterBomber, a well known Telegram channel.

Yesterday, in his speech congratulating Prigozhin and Wagner on their victory over the Ukies with the taking of Artemovsk, President Putin announced that he activated the “PERIMETER” system.
The PERIMETER system is Russia’s “dead hand” automatic response system to attacks on Russia proper. It controls launch and targeting of Russia’s Nuclear Triad/Strike Force.
When I read this, I was mystified…. Why should this victory cause activation of PERIMETER???
Now, with Helmer’s analysis, I understand…

I didn’t know about PERIMETER activation which basically says whatever you do, you don’t save either! This is a bombshell! Despite Putin having already said it by mouth before the start of the conflict, in December 2021. When he asked for negotiations! I honestly don’t believe in the nuclear level but in the conventional level you can see the madness of the politicians with NATO exercises in a zone of war! And Helmer is right, they have already destroyed the covered gas pipelines with another NATO exercise! And American policy isn’t doing anything it didn’t do in the Iraq war! Mind and mind!
Everyone knows the AFU is finished. At its greatest strength it was never able to break through a stabilized Russian defense. The only offensive victory they claim happened when US intelligence noticed Russian troops withdrawing from Kharkov. And yet they fell into a bag of Russian artillery fire! How will the rest of the Ukrainian forces all fall. It must be remembered that for the first time Russia had 6 months to prepare its defense lines in the annexed territories. Advantage that began on the side of Ukraine after 8 years building the defensive lines that Russia is destroying!
And the AFU just now hastily trained offensive maneuvers because the plan was to stay crouched in the trenches killing ruskies! But Russia sent artillery, the queen of this war and of all land wars that the US does not know how to fight without blitzkriegs! The AFU since the beginning of the conflict only has two hypotheses, to die slowly in the fortresses that NATO built or faster outside the fortresses. How will it happen now, pressured by the West for the counter-offensive! Nothing will save the Ukrainian forces and everyone knows it! The F-16s are another wonderweapons like the Abrams that nobody will see in Ukraine. And if we see it, it’s on fire!
And after annihilating the AFU, Russia completes the objective in Ukraine! Which also means that the window for the West to negociate closes in June when the ground dries up. And the saddest thing is that Russia even after entering Ukraine did not seek war. When the West mocked the 40 km long train stopped, Russia was just putting pressure on Kiev to negotiate with the Russian military apparatus. Typical of Russia! What he had already done outside the border. It was always the US that provoked the armed conflict. All of Russia’s demands in December 2021 were absolutely reasonable. They basically said, stop attacking Russia! Fulfill the Minsk Accords and withdraw missiles from Poland and Romania! There is no provocation in these proposals.
And if US politicians do what they’ve always done, which is lying, what changed to get PERIMETER activated? A disinformation campaign like we’ve never seen before, preventing people from taking to the streets to demand that politicians stop the madness and end the conflict! The great phenomenon of this conflict parallel to weapons that will go down in history is the biggest propaganda campaign ever in the West. Even with inflation and all the difficulties, its anti-Russian propaganda that prevents people from reacting! liars, just liars! Until we reach the day when we are already talking about a nuclear conflict like never before in history. Pure madness!

Charles Kupchan’s interview can serve as a case study on how delusions are formed. Simple facts are ignored or omitted if they do not fit the prearranged sequence of thought. The motivation to do so can be pride or personal investment on a story line, or an external pressure. The type of thought sequence is determined by the context. In this case, political interpretation of reality. He uses the word democracy many times (I lost count) implying that- in his definition of it – democracy is the purest form of government and that the West is the only representative of it. It is theory versus fact.

I would have asked Kapchuck to show some consistency. A few years ago he wrote an article with the title “The Palestinians Should Just Say Yes.” How about saying now “The Ukrainians should just say yes”? Back then he said:

I was able to endure 11 minutes and 26 seconds of Kupchan’s BS before starting to feel that my head was about to explode. Kudos to the interviewer for calling out his lies.

I’ve become a broken record on the topic of “delusions”. If you’ll pardon the pun, the reality is that all humans are “deluded” in the sense that we experience and act in the world indirectly, through a narrative.
Somewhere along our road out of the savannahs, forests and caves to civilization we started to create the abstract narratives our newly augmented brains demanded. Eventually, the narratives took over to both explain and to drive events.
“Reality” receded in favour of a reliable narrative, and narratives rather than autonomous individuals competed for pre-eminence in driving events. Narratives fail not only when they fail to adequately account for events in the past. Now they could fail when they failed to drive events in the direction their proponents desired.
The West’s narrative worked for 4 or 5 centuries, not because it explained the world better than competing narratives (Newton et al notwithstanding) but because it could drive events in such a way as to give its proponents tremendous advantage over all others.
Narratives evolve in response to the emerging facts about the past & present, and in anticipation of the future. The West’s narrative is failing on both counts because these are strongly related. Facts that dispute its description of the past are emerging, and so its power to predict, never mind drive the future is crumbling.
Historically, the transition from one narrative to another are epochal, paradigmatic shifts redefining (literally) everything. They start slowly, on the margins (where we are) and work their way into the centres of power over years/decades/generations.
When they get there, things start to happen fast. I think we are, in fact starting to see that now…
Fiona Hill was as vested as one can get in the incumbent “West is Best” narrative. Here she is proposing to not only shift the Ukraine narrative, but to turn it on its head. From Ukraine as a proxy for NATO in its war on Russia, to Russia as proxy for the Rest of the World in its war on the US. What became apparent on the margins a year or more ago is finally lapping at the steps of the citadel.
The war itself, like the world is what it is of course, but Ms. Hill’s proposal that the West is best served by inverting its narrative is astonishing. Astonishing because her proposed narrative opens the horizon to very different events and outcomes should it gain traction in the centre.

Have come across other remarks about Simplicius76 being a collaboration. It certainly seems to make sense when one exams the depth and range of the topic covered on two substacks. Simplicius76 states that he is Serbian. I have no opinion on who or what contacts Simplicius has or is a conduit of and think that it is irrelevant. Although Larry’s take is rational and opens further thought, it also marks Simplicius as an operative, which is not proven, however interesting one may find it. Reasoning, with broad contacts and collaborative effort of a group does not have to imply a derected state actor link. Think about it, Sonar21 can be assumed to have similar links and sources, although from a different state actor. I do not think this is true, but the same reasoning can be used to make that conclusion also. I find such not useful. BTW, his sites are not paywalled for main content.

Along with Belarus, Ukraine comprises Mackinder’s Geographical Pivot of History, published in 1904 (iirc). Controlling the pivot yields control of the Eurasian Heartland, which in turn yields control of the world.

While ordinary stupidity, ignorance and lack of foresight play a role, these factors — whether taken separately or combined — are not the prime causal mover here. The deeper answer to our question is as follows.
America’s current (usurpatory, unelected) political leadership is possessed and driven by a hyper-abstract false-philosophical vision aptly called liberal universalism. False philosophy, in all of its various forms (and there are many), exists in this fallen and sinful world because of a lack (in many people) of the love of truth.
The liberal universalist thinks and acts, with revolutionary zeal and murderous ruthlessness, from the standpoint of a false philosophy originally formed and spun out by hyper-abstract “reason” (actually, carnal or unregenerate reason) and based on a favorite prejudice (for example, equality) to bring about or instantiate some favored conception of society or the Good (for example, equality of material condition, the sexes, the races, marriage types, etc.). This deracinated and therefore barbarous abstract reason, by its nature, rejects as valueless the authority of evolved norms, custom and tradition. Historical examples of such revolutionary false philosophy, which often masquerades as philanthropy and social progressivism, are French revolutionist Jacobinism, English and American abolitionism, Soviet Jew-Bolshevism, and Maoism.
All such false-philosophical political forms characteristically reject gradual, incremental, prudential, conservative reform and insist on immediate and sweeping regime change and total social revolution and transformation. Like the Borg of Star Trek fame, these political forms are, by nature, aggressive abroad and despotic at home, and are therefore ever-eager and driven to subdue (if not entirely assimilate) neighboring states. By nature, too, liberal regimes are highly centralized and consolidated internally, an organization that enables both external aggression and internal despotism.
Driven by abstract ideals rather than concrete, evolved interests, liberal-universalist regimes, once formed in a crucible of uncompromising revolution, dismiss as weak and bourgeois the concepts of tolerance, mutual accommodation and compromise, and set out to impose their uber-noble liberal ideals on other peoples and lands.
In prosecuting war, liberal-universalist regimes characteristically insist on total warfare against the opposing (“backward”, more traditional) society, including warfare not merely on opposing armies but on the civilian populations themselves, a la Sherman in Georgia and the Carolinas, Sheridan in the Shenandoah, and the Soviet advance into Germany. If and as the liberal-universalist regime achieves force majeur, or overwhelming force, in a political-military situation, it insists on unconditional compliance and surrender. And then, after the enemy’s surrender, the liberal sets about to morally and institutionally raze and then reconstruct the society of the defeated foe, using compulsion as needed, a la postwar Yankee military occupation of South, the Weimar regime and post-WWII Allied-occupied Germany.
But the desired overthrow of the reconstituted, free and Christian post-Soviet Russia of Putin is now proving a bridge too far for the liberal-universalist Yankee empire. Alas! The false philosophy of liberal universalism carries within itself the seeds of its own demise. With its homo-trans wokism and general dysfunctionalist policies, Yankee liberalism has itself — in a development of supreme Providential irony –enervated and sapped the Yankee empire of the power and authority needed for continued global hegemon.
Long ago, the original, true, conservative, Christian America – as a voluntary political union of sovereign States — was overthrown and supplanted by a Jacobin-Yankee false-philosophical, godless and wicked “one and indivisible” Soviet Amerika. But now: Yankee-Soviet Amerika — a monument to sinful, overweening, murderous pride long masquerading as moral purity and superiority deserving of immortality — will fall as did the Soviet Union.
