When the history of the West’s attempt to destroy Putin’s Russia is written I would not be surprised that historians will draw on the wisdom of Pogo.
Pogo was a daily comic strip that was created by cartoonist Walt Kelly and syndicated to American newspapers from 1948 until 1975. Set in the Okefenokee Swamp in the Southeastern United States, Pogo followed the adventures of its anthropomorphic animal characters, including the title character, an opossum.

One of Pogo’s iconic musings — i.e., We have met the enemy and he is us — is more relevant than ever in light of the blowback underway as a result of the West’s attempt to use Ukraine to bludgeon Russia into submission. The following clip says nothing about Ukraine. But it gives you a flavor of the truth Walt Kelly, the cartoonist, was trying to convey to the public.
The West, with the United States in the lead, facilitated the start of the civil war in Ukraine in 2014 and, in the ensuing 8 years, continued to ratchet up the pressure on Russia. The hubris behind this effort is truly stunning. Conventional academics, pundits beholden to the Military Industrial Complex, and politicians keen on funding the Pentagon in order to win some swag for their constituents, bought in wholeheartedly to the propaganda that Russia was a backward, failing state.
There was no sincere attempt at honest negotiations since the Maidan coup, notwithstanding Minsk I and Minsk II. Subsequent diplomacy was a diversion. The real objective of the United States and Europe was to bolster Ukraine’s military while trying to weaken Russia, using a combination of sanctions and propaganda.
Except for scholars like Stephen Cohen and Richard Sakwa, most academics peddled a cartoon version of Russia reminiscent of Boris Badenov and public opinion ate it up:
The West genuinely believed that massive sanctions on Russia would unleash economic turmoil followed by political upheaval. Turns out the political masters of the West were half right — the sanctions did unleash economic turmoil and political upheaval is underway. Only one teeny, tiny problem — it is happening in the United States and Europe. Putin and the Russian economy are doing just fine. Turns out that Russia is self-sufficient when it comes to essentials like food, fertilizer, energy and rare earth minerals. The West is not.
Like Christopher Walken exhorting the faux Blue Oyster Cult percussionist to provide more cowbell, the NATO alliance keeps insisting that Russia is running out of missiles and other critical weapons. Western powers clearly have no sense of irony because it is their supplies of weapons that are running dry. Take Germany, for example:
German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said at the last meeting of the German Cabinet in August 2022, that “there is little scope for sending weapons from the German army’s stockpile to Ukraine. I must admit that we have reached the limits of what we can offer. Our army must be able to guarantee the defense of the states and the German Confederation.. I will make sure that this situation continues.” As she put it, these statements expressed the imminent arrival of German military support for Ukraine to the maximum; This means that Germany will have limited options in this regard in the coming periods, as well as a slowdown in the pace of support for Ukraine.

The United States also is, as Jackson Browne crooned, running on empty. It is scrounging for weapons to send to Ukraine because the United States no longer has the industrial strength to supply itself and provide foreign assistance:

Meanwhile, Putin has updated a Russian strategy employed against Napoleon in the wake of the Battle of Borodino. The Russians retreated from that blood soaked battlefield to lick the wounds and regroup while Napoleon marched triumphantly into Moscow. VICTORY? Nope. The Russians ended up setting Moscow on fire, which forced Napoleon and his troops to attempt to retreat from Russia as General Winter pounced. In the early 1800s there was no electricity to shut off in Moscow. Folks relied on wood fires, burning coal and oil for heat and light. Once there were no longer sufficient structures left standing from the raging inferno to house hungry French troops, the tide of the battle was turned and the rest, so we say, is history.
Putin is using a conventional weapon that has the effect of an Electro Magnetic Pulse (commonly associated with a nuclear blast) without going nuclear. The barrage of missiles that have destroyed a sizeable portion of Ukraine’s ability to distribute electricity, water and heat is having the same effect as Fyodor Rostopchin‘s order to torch Moscow. Make the cities unlivable and force the armies to retreat.
What is sickening and sad about what is unfolding in Ukraine is that this was preventable. If the United States and NATO had stopped supplying Ukraine with weapons and committed to not bringing Ukraine into NATO and enforced the Minsk agreements, Putin would not have launched the “Special Military Operation.”
The blow back from the West’s ham handed attempt to coerce Russia into submission has set in motion a historical realignment of the world order and initiated the dismantling of the international order established in the wake of World War II.

Our military did quite well, actually, at least at the small unit level and logistically at the operational level. We had excellent force projection and sustainment, overwhelming firepower, and the troops were mostly well led. The problem wasn’t the sergeants, lieutenants, or captains.

I only hope that more Americans and Westerners have opened their eyes to the truth of what their governments have been doing in their name, and the suffering these Western governments have caused to the whole world. The accumulated anger is building up, and the backlash will be terrible. We all could have worked together and made this world so much better for everyone, but the only way that can happen is for no one to insist they must be the only ones who commands everyone and everyone else must submit or else face destruction, sabotage, regime change or sanctions. The US-led West is not leaving much choices to the non-west except to stand up to that bullying.
Said this in January 2020, say it again. Perhaps it was not such a brilliant idea to decide to wage economic war on Russia and to steal its assets outside Russia.
The collapse of the Soviet Union and the subsequent pillaging of Russia by the West forced Russia to face hard reality: if you don’t produce, you don’t eat and you die; and a large and enduring part of western leadership is irrevocably committed to destroying Russia, so if Russia did not build an economy resilient against Western attack, and a genuinely strong defense system then Russia would die.
Meanwhile western governments, the political class, the media and businesses have spent the last 30 years becoming increasingly estranged from reality, believing they could replace real energy production and distribution systems with the parasite-power scam they call “green energy”; and that they could export most of their productive industry to other countries and still be able to maintain affluent societies by endless money printing; plus the woke nonsense destroying education, real knowledge and social cohesion, not to mention their destructive public health decisions; and the endless corruption of a MIC that exists to make exorbitant profits and pay bribes, rather than produce a solidly grounded defense force.
The West is about to have its own very painful confrontation with reality, not simply through Russia militarily imposing its own preferences on what was Ukraine but with the long-term economic fallout throughout Europe, the UK, and the US, which will grind down standards of living for many years.
Russia had the benefit of long-term control by someone who history is likely to recognize as an exemplary statesman, pursuing a consistent agenda for national reconstruction. Few Western countries will enjoy that benefit as they grapple with reality. Most of them are no longer nations, their political classes having destroyed internal cohesion in multiple ways.
Since I live in a Western country, I’m not sanguine about what will happen to us, but reality does not care what fantasies you sold yourselves.

Would the Minsk II agreement have been tolerable to the LDNR whom the nazis had been bombarding for 8 years? Suppose the Elensky regime had had the basic common sense to agree to implement Minsk II in January. Would the LDNR have agreed to dissolve, disarm, and return to be ruled by the blueyellow nazi regime with limited and easily revoked autonomy? Minsk II was and remains a worse deal for the LDNR than to the nazis.

What makes Merkl fragile is another business. In addition to having already condemned Russia in February, she had many years as Chancellor to force Kiev to implement the agreements. Which is precisely my biggest criticism of Merkl’s Chancellery. Now she even came to say that he didn’t have time to look at Ukraine because she broke his pelvic bone?! And contested many elections. She had many matters to attend to. It was very busy. And that in 2021, as a lame duck at the end of his term, she no longer had the political strength to influence Biden or Putin because she was going to leave the Chancellery. It took years to make any decision. When I took it!
During the financial crisis it was completely overtaken by its Minister of Finance – the neoliberal Wolfgang Schäuble – who fucked up the whole of southern Europe! After crippling ECB technocrats. And it didn’t cost the EU 1 cent to prevent the financial crisis from crossing the Atlantic and turning into a deep economic crisis with the sovereign debt crisis just because of speculation in the financial markets that destroyed thousands of companies and families! She treated Syrian refugees better! And nothing against. If aging Europe needs anything, it’s new blood! France understood this many years ago and even with some racial problems, unfortunately, no one in Europe is better prepared for the future in demographic terms. Because in order to pay the welfare state and retirement pensions, someone needs to work! And Europe is out of time now to start making the children it didn’t make in previous decades!
But back to the Minsk and Merkl Accords, what was most important was a new European security architecture. Which Merkl never decided either. Okay, vetoed Ukraine’s entry into NATO. But what had brought peace to Europe was preventing the arming of Ukraine following the coup. And Putin visited the Bundestag to present a new European security architecture – because it cannot be NATO that defends US interests – to define European security and he was applauded by all political parties!!! Good questions. In the interests of the Russian Federation’s long term security, it always seemed obvious to me that the role of the Donbas “breakaway” Republics was to be forced, very much against their collective will, to remain a part of the Ukraine.

Captured power plants are disconnected, including the nuclear one that “someone” keeps shelling repeatedly. Soviet Union built top notch electric infrastructure, and what’s left of Ukraine still has multiple power plants under it’s control (nuclear, thermo and hydro). They are targeting parts that can relatively easily be repaired once the war is over.
In the initial “land grab” they went as far as they could go, including an attempt at Nikolaev. They did not know beforehand that they will not be able to properly supply that bridgehead half a year down the line (and that the dam would be damaged by repeated strikes from long range weaponry that Ukrainian forces did not possess at that time).

But as we saw in the fall of certain Eastern European police states, once those police forces – that are composed of working class people – are no longer supportive of the power structure, the cabal is finished. I absolutely adore the Pogo effect. As an artist we have very little political power or vast amounts of dirty money. That said , there is a very savvy patriotic sculptor who resides in Oakland Ca. His metal artwork is representative of his 3 years time in Vietnam, His troops were shelled and he landed in the hospital miraculously surviving a stomach full of shrapnel . Yeats later on 9-11 when the WTT were demolished I asked my dear sculptor buddy his take on that act of war. His reply as a VET was as Clear as Chrystal , he told me these exact words … “ WhiteDove , What the American People DO NOT REALIZE , Is That WE ARE AT WAR WITH OURSELVES “. He knew by instinct that 9-11 was an inside operation and his words of wisdom calmed my anxious soul over what was to come. He let me in on Agenda 21 and after that , every question I had was answered. He knew more conflict was to come and his artworkto this day reflex’s all that is good and free.
