If you think that Volodomyr Zelensky is the first leader in the throes of a civil war (yes, I know, Russia invaded, but the war in Ukraine at its roots is a civil war) to visit Washington, DC and speak to Congress and be compared with Winston Churchill, think again.
I thank my friend, Helmholtz Smith, for noting this historical precedent and finding the relevant video.
While I am sure Zelensky is flattered to be described as a modern day Churchill, he was not the first accorded that honor. Did you know that Ngo Dinh Diem also was the Vietnamese Winston Churchill?
In May 1961, U.S. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson visited Saigon and enthusiastically declared Diệm the “Winston Churchill of Asia”. Asked why he had made the comment, Johnson replied, “Diệm’s the only boy we got out there.” Johnson assured Diệm of more aid in molding a fighting force that could resist the communists.
Diem learned the hard way that once your U.S. backers anoint you as the next Churchill, your days are numbered. Diem was murdered as a consequence of a U.S. engineered coup.

He authored scholarly books and established himself as one of the greatest rhetoricians of all times. He had a knack for turning a phrase and creating iconic moments.
Zelensky? I challenge anyone to recite one memorable moment from Zelensky’s snooze fest before the U.S. Congress. Banality thy name is Volodomyr. But Zelensky can do something that Churchill never did — he can play the piano with his penis. Gives new meaning to the phrase, “banging out a tune.”
Now, set aside the levity. Remember this week as another watershed moment in U.S. history. At the very moment that Washington embraced a malevolent dictator masquerading as a Nazified version of Fidel Castro, Russia sent an unmistakable message to the United States and Europe — Russia acknowledged that a state of war exists, pitting Russia against NATO and the United States, and it is building up its conventional and nuclear forces in anticipation of a future clash.

The question that continues to nag me, Larry, is most basic. What is the Ukraine-Russia War’s endgame? What do we see as a Ukraine win? Russia’s withdrawal? What does Ukraine see as a win – old borders restored, Russia minds its own business, etc.? What does Russia see as a win – total or partial domination of Ukraine? A western border pushback to NATO’s backyard? Then fortify it (build a fucking wall)? I don’t see focused discussion of the endgame. No one seems to be asking or answering the endgame question. It appears we (the US) are dumping $$ billions into Ukraine’s defense without telling the taxpayers what the money is expected to achieve – the endgame.

I’ve been saying this for months. By next year, Z and his cronies will be swept aside, many will be killed. A new leadership will take its place in Ukraine and maybe, just maybe, we might have some meaningful peace talks and this horrible war will come to an end.
That may be, although I doubt it – but even if that were to be the outcome, what will ‘peace’ mean to Ukraine? Unless everyone who was so generous with the cash is willing to write off their ‘investments in democracy’, Ukraine will owe billions upon billions it can never repay. Much of the country that Yanukovych’s ‘successors’ once allowed could be in pretty good shape for about $70 Billion will be just churned muck and shell craters, and at least half of the state’s tax base will have evaporated – in the form of refugees, more than 2 million of them gone to Russia – never to return and contribute to Ukrainian recovery. The country started the war broke, and continued to accept handouts and ‘loans’ hand over fist throughout. No Ukrainian living today will ever see the country debt-free, even if most of the loans are written off (as they might well be, considering they were only ever a front for laundering more western currency into existence).
Unless Russia gives back or is made to relinquish the eastern regions to which it laid claim, most of the best farmland and all the coalfields will be outside Kiev’s control. Its gold reserves vanished long before the war, and the hryvna never got close to what it was worth in exchange before the Glorious Maidan. Even then, minimum wage was a third what it was in Russia.
I suppose the west could step up, and generously fund the rebirth of a country which will become a net attraction for immigrants, in addition to drawing all the Ukrainian refugees back home to the Land Of Opportunity. But I suspect a Jimi Hendrix Comeback Tour is more likely to happen.
I wish the Ukraine military leadership has the gut to take over the government in Kiev and call for peace talk with Russia to prevent more unnecessary deaths. Otherwise Ukraine state will be destroyed as we know it.

Both sides are telling themselves they are in an existential struggle and need to buckle down for the long game and stick it out. I believe the US is trying to manage a scorched earth retreat while thinking they can use high interest rates to buy everything of value in Europe and move it to North America. The Russians plan invest in a new trading system Eastward where fiat currency can’t swindle away their physical resources. I think both sides will get what they want. The key question is how long will European citizens allow their homeland to be intentionally derated? I find it quite impressive how effective the US propaganda machine works. It’s just like science fiction.

I, however, believe that Helmer is wrong in including Odessa and Kharkov in the DMZ: I believe Russian troops will advance to annex both places (via a referendum, of course) and will make those places Russian, as well. In other words, I believe Russia will wipe out everything up to the Dniepr, then advance far enough into that area to establish a DMZ that extends *beyond* the Dniepr well into RumpUkrainian territory. I believe it likely, as well, that Russian strikes will eradicate most electrical and water supplies in RumpUkraine, with combined missile and air-strikes taking out whatever anti-aircraft and military bases may remain in the far west of the Former Ukraine.
I believe it likely that there will be a strong concentration on wiping out all lines of communication between Poland and Ukraine, as well.
I should further add that I expect, upon accepting the Ukrainian surrender, that Russia will establish permanent Russian observers to police Kiev and all major Ukrainian population centers that:
A) Have direct, uninterrupted transport lines with the Polish, Slovakian, Hungarian, and Romanian/Moldavian borders, and
B) Have direct, uninterrupted transport lines with the DMZ.
“Denazification” can be linked to economic incentives that the West, clearly, just doesn’t have the resources to offer: natural gas, steel, coal, manufactured goods, etc. These will be effective Russian monopolies in the region, going forward, so by elevating certain oligarchs over others and tasking them with the policing of Nazi elements in RumpUkraine, Russia could effectively stonewall NATO from any further influence in the region–except, of course, via state terrorism against the RumpUkrainian leadership.
Which, again, Russian ISR and intelligence services, along with Belorussia, could provide a considerable measure of protection against–as has been recently shown in Kazakhstan.

I generally agree. The neocons like Sen. Graham have the delusional goal of regime change in Russia, figuring the populace will turn on Putin. Not gonna happen. The last major conflict where the US was on the winning side was WWII, and Russia did the heavy lifting there, the Russian-German front being bigger than the rest of WWII, including the Pacific, combined. The US goals are clear, and not realistic, and it remains to be seen how far they’ll push.
Russia, I believe, will do what Russia always does, defend itself and it’s sovereignty. NATO wants to push to Russia’s doorstep, and Russia seems to have the idea that if NATO wants to be on the Russian border, we’ll move it west.
Economically the real destruction is taking place. Over 140 countries don’t support the NATO side, either neutral or supportive of Russia. What little goodwill the US had left is gone with the weaponization of the financial system. That scared everybody. The US has few, if any friends left, no capacity to support any kind of serious war, as they can’t produce enough ammo and the guns that fire it are fragile. Russia has superior weapons and strategy, fully in the 21st century and not stuck in the 20th like the US. Navies are now obsolete, for example due to hypersonics.
The US economy has been a zombie affair for decades, and the funny money system can’t handle 5% interest rates, let alone anything that would put a lid on inflation. I agree it would be folly to assume that the reality of the military situation is lost on the smart people in the USA (there are many). Eventually the Russian advantages in weaponry such as they are now (deployed hypersonics etc) will be addressed and a new paradigm will be established (e.g. US carrier groups are recognised to be redundant in a peer conflict with hypersonics).
The Ukraine war is providing an education in new strategies and tactics and a weapons testing facility for all.
The real question for me is about where to from here. I expect that Ukraine will effectively cease to exist as a country. The neocons were looking to take Russia on in 2014, that was the point of the coup, and it took the Russians completely by surprise. As usual the neocon’s plan didn’t pan out as expected. They didn’t get Sevastopol.
I doubt that Putin or his colleagues will ever unlearn the lessons of the last 8 years, including the deceit of Merkel et al. – “agreement incapable”. It has become abundantly clear to them the west is committed to being Russia’s enemy. It has been that way for the Brits and the Poles for centuries and so, now it seems, with the yanks and most of western Europe.
Ultimately the war between Russia and the west will be resolved economically – as long as MAD applies. Russian industry, diplomacy and resources are serving Russia well. One can only hope that the standoff will continue long enough for the newly emerging multipolar world, with Russia and China in the lead and with new parallel financial systems and a different reserve currency, to evolve sufficiently to effectively defang the west.

The Russians are going launch multiple offensives in the northeast, all with the aim of surrounding Kiev (sound familiar? It should. ) Then they are going to siege the city. This does not mean the Russians are going to pound the city with their artillery, or reduce it to rubble with their Tupolovs, or fight for it street by street with T-72s and BMPs.
They are going to siege it, which means, they are going systematically starve it into submission from afar.
This siege will either bring Washington to negotiating table, or it won’t. If it does, the Russian Federation will allow Washington to retain Odessa In other words, the rump state menace, still nown as Ukraine, that Washington will be allowed to maintain Russia’s southwestern flank, will not be landlocked.
If Washington refuses to negotiate, then the rump state menace will be reduced to landlocked status and its new capitol will be in Lvov, assuming the Russians are still in a generous mood (when aren’t they?), and allow a rump state menace to exist at all.
If it’s scenario number two, Washington refuses to negotiate, then I suspect this Nazi proxie state is not going to down easy, because Nazi proxie states rarely do, and the suburbs of Kiev, and the suburbs of other places like Kharkov, Sumy, and Chernihiv, may be reduced to ash by Russian thermobarics, as what’s left of the Ukraine army launches counterattacks from out of these cities, with the hopeless aim of breaking Russian siege lines.

Endgame in UKR? My guesses are the following:
– RU endgame for UKR is to demilitarize it, take RU speaking lands and leave others in heavy dependence and probably give some part of them to some other countries to be their headache.
RU endgame for West is to brake global currency monopoly, brake their military and economic organizations and assert multipolar world, since there is no more place for RU in unipolar one.
– West endgame is to defeat and brake apart RU, rob it of every value and resource, after which unipolar world would become reality, and current flow of crisis on the west could that way be easily handled, especially since without RU there would be noone left to oppose them
– UKR endgame is total military victory over RU and to become capos (forced labor supervizors) for RU people – i.e. they know the language and they have the hate. I can see no other endgame for them as they no longer own anything in their own country, so only use left for them is infamous capo role, and only in case that they manage to win.
The end game is US forces out of the European Peninsula.
The leverage? 18 million Ukrainian emigrants in the EU.

The Russian endgame is in my opinion rather simple. I do believe none of this would’ve happened if the West was a reliable partner and open to negotiations. I do believe that the Russians would have left it with the 4 new oblasts if a deal could be made. However, I don’t believe that the Russian endgame can be defined. It will be something like ensuring Russia’s security but how that will look like is subject to change. I believe in that regard, Russia can only react.
The Western endgame on the other hand has to be Russia’s submission and absorption into the empire. How that will be made to look like, the PR departments will decide. The Ukrainian endgame does not really matter as it’s not a force in this game (just blue and yellow painted figurines).
The plan to achieve that seems to be rather perilous, though. The West is on the clock as it gets weaker with every passing day, while there’s still another strong player, China. It seems like the West is taking the insurgency route there. How about a rebel group getting their hands on a nuke and blowing Beijing sky high? Since it’s far away from the West, nobody will care.
The West needs to deal with both in a timely manner which makes the last hurrah of this dying empire extremely dangerous.

Gazprom has been banned from buying gas from its projects with Western partners at above a price to be set by Kremlin
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Thursday that partially relieves state energy major Gazprom from fulfilling its obligations to its foreign partners who hail from countries that have imposed sanctions on Moscow.

And how the US was preparing to deploy in eastern Ukraine with the ability to reach Moscow in a tiny fraction of minutes. USA end game is of course severe weakening and destruction of Russia, so the west can turn it into a colony. They will use up Ukraine army, and possibly turn to the Poles as the next battering ram, if they think they can get away with it. This plan is not working, and won’t work. The facts are that 85% of the world is supportive of Russia and has prepared for this moment for 14 years. China, India, Brazil, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are key countries supporting Russia in a significant manner. USA is losing hegemony – it is out of control, fighting for control, and losing. My endgame. Russia with China dethrones the US dollar which at the moment allows the US to export it’s inflation. For example South Africa, with a third of Russian annual gold production, is now in BRICS. Regarding Ukraine I think Russia will stop Poland grabbing a slice, will keep most of the wheat producing land, Odessa and Transnistria.
