Ukraine’s Western Backed Gamble To Capture Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant Backfires

1 September 2022 by Larry Johnson 82 Comments

The title sums it up in a nutshell. The intelligence services of the U.K. and the United States put together a plan and directed Ukraine to carry it out–i.e., capture the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant from the Russians on the very day that UN Inspectors were scheduled to arrive. This was a highly coordinated operation. (See Andrei Martyanov’s piece on U.S. role in planning the Kherson offensive.) For example, David Ignatius, a reliable shill for the CIA, wrote a piece in the Washington Post–Ukraine’s Counteroffensive Is More Than Just Bravado. His cheerleading for Ukraine is no mere coincidence on the same day that the Ukrainian Army gambled and lost at Zaporizhzhia (warning, this is behind a firewall):

As Ukraine mounts a new counteroffensive in the southern part of the country, Zelensky’s bravado risks setting expectations too high. In truth, Ukraine probably won’t liberate its territory this year, or even next. Still, as Ukrainian forces push toward the Black Sea coast, Zelensky is delivering a defiant response to President Vladimir Putin’s claim that Ukraine is not a real country. Not only can Ukraine survive, it also can regain some of its occupied land.

The best defense is a good offense, as military strategists have argued for centuries. And if Ukraine’s drive toward the coast succeeds, it will restore the country’s economic viability by relieving pressure on its port city of Odessa. Moreover, it could threaten Russia’s occupation of Crimea by cutting into the land bridge that connects to the Russian-controlled Donbas region in the east.

The Ukrainian attempt to capture the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant consisted of two river crossings–1: seven speed boats carrying up to 60s that landed 3 kilometers northeast of the ZNP and 2: two barges launched several miles south of the ZNP manned by Ukrainian airborne forces.

The Russian Ministry of Defense provides an accurate summary of the action:

On the morning of September 1, the Kiev regime attempted a major provocation to disrupt the arrival of IAEA expert working group at Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.

▫️At 6:20 a.m., seven fast-moving motorboats landed on the coast of Kakhovskoye reservoir, three kilometres northeast of Zaporozhye NPP, with two sabotage groups of up to 60 people in total.

▫️The sabotage groups were detected and blocked in the drop-off area by Russian National Guard units guarding the territory of Zaporozhye NPP.

▫️A unit of the Russian Armed Forces and helicopters of the army aviation arrived to reinforce Russian Guard troops in order to suppress an attempt to enter the nuclear power plant and destroy Ukrainian saboteurs.

▫️At about 7:00 a.m., units of the Russian Armed Forces prevented another attempted landing to seize a nuclear power plant.

▫️A few kilometres from Zaporozhye NPP near Vodyanoye, an attempt was made to land a tactical airborne assault by AFU two self-propelled barges from Nikopol. Two self-propelled barges carrying tactical airborne assault of AFU are sunk as a result of the Russian Armed Forces’ shelling.

▫️As of 8:00 a.m., the Kiev regime has blocked the passage of IAEA expert mission from controlled territory to Zaporozhye NPP.

▫️Ukrainian artillery is shelling the territory of Zaporozhye NPP, the meeting place of IAEA mission with Russian specialists near Vasil’evka, as well as the route of their movement to Energodar. Four shells exploded 400 metres from the 1st unit of Zaporozhye NPP.

If Ukraine had pulled this off it would have been a major black eye for the Russians and would have put the nuclear plant back in Ukrainian hands. It would have marked the first serious victory in this war for Ukraine. If, if, if. There is an old saying, “If ifs and buts were candy and nuts it would be Christmas every day.” Christmas did not come for Ukraine. They got their ass handed to them.

The Ukrainian troops selected to carry out this operation clearly had advanced training. Some sources report that the British did the training and MI-6 had the lead in planning the operation. The CIA’s role appears to have been providing support on the information warfare front (i.e., getting Ignatius to tee up an article). Ukrainian sources are privately bitching that someone leaked the op to the Russians. It was an elaborate ambush. These are troops Ukraine could not afford to lose. There was a substantial investment in time and money to train them for this mission. I estimate at least two months were devoted to the training and equipping of these two attack elements.

This was not the brain child of the Ukrainians. This has the fingerprints of western intelligence all over it. That is why there were so many western reporters on hand. If Ukraine had succeeded, the operation would have dominated western news coverage. “Ukraine’s stunning victory.” Success would have bought Zelensky and Ukraine more time.

But this was a failure and it is likely to have some rather nasty side effects. The Ukrainians have lost some, if not all, faith in the competence and promises of the British and the American intelligence offices. I am pretty sure the Ukrainians were promised that this would be a swift victory and would catch the Russians with their pants down.

Just consider how things would look if Ukraine had pulled this off. With Ukrainian forces in control of the ZNP plant complex, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspection team would arrive and would have certified that Russia was shelling the place. In fact, with the IAEA present, it would have been crazy for Russia to try to take the facility back. Note that the IAEA team came prepared to leave some of its members behind. I would not be surprised to learn that the head of the IAEA team was briefed on the upcoming operation and was prepared to play the role assigned to him. Whoops. Russian killed those plans along with almost 100 Ukrainian troops involved in the operation.

One Telegram channel offers a dire assessment of the Ukrainian Kherson offensive:

The second wave of Ukrainian offense on Kherson ends in a predictable disaster, 2000 or more KIA, and between 5 and 6 thousands wounded. The hospitals in all the nearby large cities nearby are full. Yet, Ukrainians cling to the bridgehead near Davydov Brod, that can indicate their intent to try for the third time.

Russian intelligence uncovered the plan of Ukrainian spec op on Zaporozhye nuclear plant to capture it shortly before the IAEA mission would arrive. Some 300 elite Ukrainian elite special forces operatives lured into a trap and destroyed.

Apart from creating tensions between Ukraine and its western allies, this failure also is likely to exacerbate strife within the Ukrainian leadership. There are reports that the Ukrainian military leader, General Zaluzhny, was at odds with President Zelensky over the timing and scale of Ukraine’s “offensive”. This is not only a loss of face for Zelensky, it is likely a loss of support from key members of the Ukrainian government.

The icing on the cake for Russia came from the UN. In response to a reporter asking about the military action around the nuclear facility, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric thanked Russia:

Of course. Everyone has their price and, if you can print arbitrarily large amounts of “money” and have it accepted at face value anywhere in the world, you have no problems paying it. On the rare occasion you find an honest man who won’t take a bribe, you control the mass media so you can smear them until they resign or are forced out. And if all else fails you can always have them whacked.

On another tack, one has to wonder just how long the senior military and, for that matter, the rank and file of ukie military, will put up with this political incompetence and bloody slaughter.

The blood baths continue while the fat asses in wash and london decide what the next game they will try.

Everyone of the existing international organizations with the words” World” United” and International” were all created and are funded by the USA. Since things did not go according to plan, the IAEA is trapped by the Russians now and has to play fair, as they really don’t have a choice. Some of the IAEA “team” are neutral and fair, as the countries they represent are BRICS or closely aligned to BRICS. The Russians were several steps ahead in this adventure today. MI6 and Co. simply have no understanding of the Russians at all.

They are trying to argue that they were not sovereign in 1954, so waiver is invalid and it was just for East Germany. It’s legalnonsense.

The German Foreign Minister Discredited The Entire Concept Of Western Democracy

All told, Baerbock’s remarks will in all likelihood be seen as a turning point in hindsight, during which time the “democratic” mask infamously slipped to reveal the German elite’s dictatorial face. “Germany’s Century-Long Plot To Capture Control Of Europe Is Almost Complete” in the economic, military, and political spheres, for which reason its elite seem to have decided that it’s time to gradually impose a dictatorship at home in order to supposedly lay the basis for their dictatorship over the rest of the EU.

When I was still at school, it became known that the founding members of the Greens (around 1980) consisted of 25% old Nazis. The Greens have in their ranks some Nazis in their ancestral line. Green ideas show many parallels with National Socialist ideas. In 1980 there was little interest in the Greens among German voters. The vast majority rejected her. Only German media courted her, until today. At that time it was also known that the Greens clearly sympathized with the RAF terrorists. Seriously, nobody could choose them. and so in Germany the Greens are compared to a melon. Green on the outside, red on the inside and with brown seeds.

I have long harbored the suspicion that both the United Nations (in the form of the Secretary-General, António Guterres) and International Atomic Energy Agency (in the form of the Director-General, Rafael Grossi) are in the pockets of the United States government. Mr. Guterres has had many opportunities in the last 6 months to offer a neutral perspective on the Ukrainian conflict, and yet his silence in those times speaks volumes as to where his loyalties lie. Mr. Grossi missed his big payoff this week by circumstances that prevented his preordained role in the CIA/MI6/Mossad-arranged Zaporyzhe NPP operation. Both of these men are as bribed as any in the history of the world, and they bring shame and disgrace to their respective families.

I imagine the head of the UN group was advised this might happen and what to do if it was successful. You are likely mistaken.

You will likely be offered the opportunity to know but just not now as patience is a virtue.

However you may not “believe” datastreams when the opportunity is offered, which will likely mistakenly be designated/interpreted as “Russian dis-information”, just as notices of intent released in December 2021 were interpreted as ultimata, a process which the opponents will likely interpret as a “victory” for and confirmation of, the power of “American” propaganda.

When some crossed the road to Children’s World to stock up on mirrors in 1991, some of a wry disposition pondered whether baby comforters should be included in the order, but on further consideration they decided that doing so might be adversely interpreted.

On reflecting on this — I am sure the UN was involved in this scheme. It was planned to occur a couple of hours before they arrived. After Ukraine took control of the plant the UN would have declared it international UN protected territory. That was why they agreed to go there. After that the security council could have become involved in anything to do with the plant. The Russians had good luck on this one it was a close call and of course if successful it would have gotten more MSM coverage than Trevon Martin’s death by the “white” hispanic Zimmerman. Akin to what was happening during what we call “the phony war” between Churchill and Hitler back when a lost German bomber accidentally dropped a single munition on a civvie target on the London docks – thus giving Churchill the excuse and rhetorical underpinning in escalating the war.

Hello Larry! You are absolutely correct about “coordinated provocation”. In fact, I even have proof! Yesterday (31 of Aug) night at about 10 pm Pacific time the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp) in their evening news announced something that stunned me (it appeared too late to me that they are talking about Ukraine, so I did not catch the names of people involved): apparently, somebody on Ukraine side called the head of the mission and tried to dissuade them from going to the ZNPP, to which (I think it was Grossi himself but cannot be sure) said that they were on their way already and have no plans to cancel or delay their visit.

That sounded like a clear provocation to me and, realizing that something is really fishy, ran to my laptop to check the news from the front just as the news started coming in about the attack, more and more pouring in as hours progressed.

Interestingly, I could not find anywhere any information about that conversation and don’t think the CBC repeated it again since. Maybe it was some kind of a journalistic slip before somebody realized how damaging that news could be, not sure. Grossi is very tight-lipped, so I am not sure this information has been repeated anywhere else – but I just happened to hear it by shear chance.

It startled me particularly because we all expected something terrible to happen before the mission arrived, so it could not visit the plant. As you know, Ukrainians were extremely slippery and nervous about the whole issue of the inspection, so everybody expected a provocation or worse. And after Podolyak’s declaration in Kiev on the 30 that he “expects the delegation to find evidence of Russia’s attacks”, most people assumed that the agreement about that has been reached and the “order is issued”, so nobody even believed that this visit will be objective.

But when I heard that they responded with refusal “to comply” with Ukr. demands not to go, I became very optimistic – only to read that the delegation has been stopped 20 km before the plant and was not allowed to proceed. Luckily, they were, in the end, insistent and did manage to get there when the whole “excitement” was already over. So, – no shellings today (after that one morning close hit) and the quiet will probably continue until the delegation leaves (hopefully). I wish they could stay there a bit longer.

Not surprisingly, right after Grossi left this afternoon after just a short visit, Podolyak issued a declaration that “they are disappointed in Grossi that he did not issue immediate condemnation of Russia”. I guess Ukrainians in their complete brazenness, did not expect that their order won’t be followed to a T! They did not even want to wait until he returns home and gets the formal report done. Maybe they will even call him “on the red carpet” to scold him in Kiev on his way back and make sure he “behaves as expected”!

How can ANYBODY take these rude angry people who think the whole world owes them seriously, escapes me!

At some point one must assess the Ukrainian physical abilities… Videos show ponchy or gangly individuals with obviously no real physical training. I mean, we don’t expect rambo style dudes but at least not those spineless cohorts. Must also be noted that the Russian troops facing them in their offensive in Kharkov were militias. No Russians on the horizon. That speaks volume.

Tonight’s post by Dima Rybar in Telegram (Google translate from Russian):
“Against the background of the “counterattack” in the Kherson direction, which takes place mainly in Telegram, censorship has been increased for Ukrainian journalists. All war correspondents were recalled from the front, in addition, they were given “recommendations”, which are in the nature of requirements.

    These are the directives:

▪️Journalists are forbidden to evaluate the actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

▪️Only the military leadership reports on the course of hostilities, that is, you cannot rely on information from ordinary military personnel or field commanders

▪️It is forbidden to interpret the military situation in an alternative way from the official one

    ▪️Your own predictions are prohibited

▪️Only officials of the Armed Forces of Ukraine report on all military actions, their consequences and results

Such an approach should hide the failed results of the “counterattack” and prevent the demoralization of both the military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and ordinary Ukrainians.

“UKRAINE’S WESTERN BACKED GAMBLE TO CAPTURE ZAPORIZHZHIA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT BACKFIRES”

Headlines are tools to obfuscate details including purposes, enhanced when the target audience were/are socialised in cultures of generalisation.

Rigorous evaluation requires the understanding and establishment of purposes, which in this case is apparently perceived as solely “to capture Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station” which to some degree the would like to be capturers probably believed.

There is a caution in evaluating interactive endeavours which is “Do you think your opponent is a stupid as you are ?”.

This caution is useful in outlining and testing hypotheses of purposes in order to test hypotheses of evaluation.

One hypothesis of purpose among many to test is what is for afters? given some opponents are presently pondering “exit strategies” whilst proselytising that they are not with the aid of assorted useful idiots.

One such possible “exist strategies” is to encourage increased number of killed in action Ukrainians by the Russian Federation in the hope of precluding any rapproachment between Ukraine and The Russian Federation.

The “failed endeavour” did increase the number of killed in action Ukrainians and hence could be evaluated as a success since it did not backfire, whilst the purpose of precluding any rapproachment between Ukraine and The Russian Federation can not yet be evaluated, but can be evangelised in further preparation.

I imagine Ukraine (or rather MI6) presumed that Russia would be moving out all its troops and artillery ahead of the inspection.
It doesn’t seem to have done so (too easy for US/nato to provide drone/satellite evidence).
And since the initial inspection is over it would seem that Russia has no artillery there at all.

Leaving Ukraine naked and stark staring liars over all the shelling stories.
Not that the western media will notice.

      “I imagine Ukraine (or rather MI6) presumed…”

Your lacunae lie primarily in notions of sole/prime agency’s derivatives/extrapolations of unicausality, and a strategy/the strategy conflation, plus your other facilities including but not restricted to access to datastreams, hence your reliance on “I imagine.”

Depending on the facilities in interaction of the interlocutors, strategies are always plural but not always perceived/marketed as such, through prior and continuing socialisation as observed in NotRubbingSticks says

“the Ukraine troops were planning on using the IEA guys as human shields”.

Although some who believe themselves to be controllers/mentors of Ukraine and its troops fail to acknowledge/understand, the mentors of Ukraine and some of the controllers of troops include but were not restricted to the observations of Dmytro Dontsev.

Other examples were based on conversations on Independence Square in 2014 when a certain Jewish lady and her disciples brought forms of bread bulkas but not fishes – even forgetting the salt – to the assembled congregation, which gave rise to conversations with an ” customer service official” with a uniform, register and accent likely from the Ternopil region by a Middle aged lady with a Kiev accent.

Part of the approximate conversation which has always been disappeared in “The West” included but was not restricted to the following:

Middle aged lady to customer services : These Zh*** (in Ukrainian not Polish pronunciation) are back again trying to make us guests in our own house, like before.

      Customer services reply:
Don’t worry when they have served their purposes their fates will be like before.
Today they have their uses, but not remembering the salt.

“The best defense is a good offense…” True for a good offense, but a poor (overly complex) offense is worse than a bad defense.

“[I]f Ukraine’s drive toward the coast succeeds, it will restore the country’s economic viability by relieving pressure on its port city of Odessa. Moreover, it could threaten Russia’s occupation of Crimea by cutting into the land bridge…” Sounds like someone counted their Chickens Kiev before they hatched!!

“Are these politicos mad?” Yes, they are. Regarding Biden’s pure demagoguery and the unswerving madness of the foreign minister, there is, I think, an explanation. There is a spiritual explanation coming forth Sept. 6 that will illuminate many on the pure madness that is seen in the culture and thinking of the western world, especially the US. The new book by Jonathan Cahn, “The return of the gods,” will give an explanation of the consequences of US attitudes of the last 60 years, especially.

“If Ukraine had succeeded, the operation would have dominated western news coverage”.

But it failed and it seems like the news coverage remains almost completely silent about this operation. Some suggest even it’s all “fake Russian propaganda”. How do you see the fact that today Ukraine announce they have destroyed a Russian military base near the nuclear power plant? Are they trying to hide the failed operation?

Whoever thought putting 300 soldiers into slow moving, unprotected, ‘attack barges’ should be charged with war crimes. No air support, and after the advance force was eliminated.

It is not EU or American elites. It is in general English pirates who 3 times repeatedly voted to power war criminals Margaret witch thatcher and Tony liar Blair.
These all English (including masses who prefer war mongers and make joke of peaceful candidates like Jeremy corbin or Michael booth calling them peacenicks) are waging race war against all non anglos including Russia and Germans.
Those pirate need to be eleminated urgently.

Europe has got no danger from Russia or from each other nation of Europe. But Europe has big danger from England.
All wars in Europe have been consequence of english plots to make two European nations (usually the two strongest ones) fight each other. Including 1st world war and then 2nd World War.
Gulf war was plotted by witch thatcher, first Iraq war by criminal tony blair- this Syrian war  again by english rats which borne their ugly child ISIS.
Tony Blair, who, when occupied Iraq, claimed that “we will become the British Empire again,” meaning that he will occupy the rest of the world too!
Now the british are repackaging their dream as global Britain. Only when wars become unpopular, the english stop taking credit for that and let blame be placed on Jews.
and stupid people including hitler blamed jews while it was all along the english parasites who l destabilise, plot and run the war (but those cowards do not fight in beginning-they come late to feast on already weakened enemy of the day.).
Cold war against Russia was started for the same reason as cold war against Germany has started. TO keep britain in picture as it gives them a sense of false position, to harass other country and wreck others economy.

This will never be stated. But the Russian Army is putting on a graduate level class in Military operations. If they have time at West Point in the future after their transgender transitioning classes, this will be studied Ad Nauseum. This is an Army being left alone to win a war. With support from its government. What a concept.

      ” What a concept.”

It is sometimes known as co-operation, which is increasingly understood in most of the world as being more productive than coercion, although some social relations cannot wholly perceive or implement the concept, but try to sell a virtual version of “co-operation by coercion”, sometimes known as rules based order, thereby being complicit/co-operating in their own transcendence.
