While the war in Ukraine has nothing to do with the inferno that swept across the island of Maui, the two events share something in common — i.e., the actions (or inaction) of the relevant government authorities in each case made the carnage possible. First, thanks for all the very good info and analysis you are providing – this is one of the first news sites I check each day.
I live on Maui and have nearly 20 years of working for State, Federal and Local governments. I’ve been a Public Works Director, have a Master’s Degree in Public Administration (so I am at least qualified to push a broom…) and 20 years of working as an investigator both in private and public sector. I currently work for the State of Hawaii as an investigator. I can tell you for a fact that the response here is nothing short of a circus. In the emergency management training I had (albeit many years ago) we were told there needs to be ONE person in charge and directing resources once an emergency is declared. Here, we didn’t see that – and I think the results show that. We are being told there are about 1,500 people missing but your source is saying 5,000. The loss of life is being soft-peddled ; “we expect that number to increase” is all we really hear but I will not be surprised if there are 500+. They’ve located 100 or so bodies so far with about 25-30% of the area searched (about 20 cadaver dogs onsite). There are a lot of conspiracy theories being floated – from DEW/Microwaves being used to set the fire, to Oprah and other wealthy people purposely setting the fire to make a land grab to the notion that this is all a set up for clearing out Maui so it can be rebuilt into an AI/15-minute city paradise. Having worked so long for the government I simply tell people that such plans may sound fine on paper, but the government is so incompetent that they could never come to fruition.
If you have the inclination, I think an article from you on how to evaluate information would be useful to many people.

I just read your article about Maui. You are spot-on. Here is some hear-say I’ve gotten (I live in Kihei/Wailea area). A good friend told me she saw a firefighter at Costco a couple of days after the fire. She mentioned that the death toll was just raised to 50-something. He told her that the firefighters had already used up 400 body bags, all that they had available. He said the death toll was way under-counted.
Last Saturday afternoon my wife and I went to the Humane Society (she volunteers there) and joined about 100 people prepping food bags, etc for displaced people with pets. I was working with a young guy loading trucks and during a break he told me he was a police officer stationed up in Haleakala and brought down to assist with finding bodies in the rubble of Lahaina. He told me that everywhere one stepped there were the charred remains of bodies, and in his opinion the death count was way low.
Unattributed comments, but it may help with you with fact-finding. Good luck. It’s a terrible thing that happened.

Comments: Your article about the Lahaina fire is pretty accurate. I lived in Lahaina from 2003-2015. I traveled there regularly until 2019. I have many friends there, and am in contact with many of them. This disaster was 50+ years in the making. It was 100% preventable, but the corruption and ineptitude is so great, nothing was done. This is the result. The word needs to get out about why this happened, and the awful response of the county and state. I can provide more details to help you write more articles.

The failure of the local and state government in Hawaii is profound and the surviving locals are seething with rage. I personally do not give much credence to the accusation that the fires on Lahaina were ignited by a Directed Energy Weapon. The combination of gale force winds and fragile power lines is the most likely cause for the massive blaze.
What we have here is a complete failure of the Emergency Response System. It was a failure to detect the severe nature of the threat. It was a failure to notify residents of the need to flee. It was a failure to call immediately for State and Federal resources to deal with the tragedy. I would note that my principal source on Maui is very laudatory of the work FEMA has done in searching the rubble and recovering remains. His assessment of the response of Hawaiian authorities is scathing and involves the use of many of the seven words you cannot say on television.
Regardless of how the fire started, the cause of the mass casualties was the incredibly stupid order to “shelter in place.” The person or persons responsible for that need to be charged criminally and put in jail. The last thing you should do in the face of any wild fire is stay in place. You run like hell is after you (because it is). Get out, if you can.
My source in Hawaii described scenes lifted from Dante’s Inferno. Entire families clustered in their home’s bathroom using the bathtub filled with water seeking refuge. All burned beyond recognition. Firefighters are vomiting when they uncover these horrific remains. The rescue workers involved in this grisly recovery task will likely be Post Traumatic Stress casualties themselves.

Larry, I went through the biggest fire in South Africa’s history. We never had any warning from Government and were only saved because it started 30km away, and thus had time to act. We were trapped as there was only one road, a highway, running through the town. Fire was both sides. ‘Only’ 8 people died, including a toddler on the neighbouring property. However, 1000 buildings got burnt, and there was over R3bn damage. It’s also a tourist-based economy so we were fucked economically. The sting in the tale is that the local government manufactured a fraudulent investigation to cover their arses lying about the cause (the fire started 2 months before, and became an inferno when big winds came – rural residents had repeatedly warned them). I protested. Politician posts on Facebook that I was pretending to be a victim to abuse real victims, an attempt to discredit me despite my 2yr rental and possessions having burnt. Eventually 4 serious reports, released over 2 years, back my position. The Premier allowing the cover-up became head of the opposition in the country. The Mayor went to parliament. The Fire Chief got put in charge of Cape Town. Once in corruption, crooks become family, and promotion is the only option.

Don’t project the uselessness of your lousy US emergency response system onto us. We warn and evacuate — find one case this year where we didn’t, and there have been about a dozen cases. The one case where there was about zero warning of a wildfire was here where I live in Nova Scotia this May. 14,000 people got out from a blazing leafy suburb where wind fanned the flames that started in a backyard, and nobody died. It was close, but even people a few blocks away were unaware at the start. Somebody has to call 911 or who’s to know? The area was razed.
In an ideal world, the emergency response would have been about a half-hour earlier, but it was far from a total shambles in the end. Jeez, the roofers who were repairing the house next door saw the fire start, and they didn’t get on the horn right away.
Hundreds of wildfires from Quebec to the West and the North this year, and none of them started in towns or cities as in my local case. So the emergency preparedness services have responded well with early warnings, then ords to get out when the need was obvious and there was adequate time to do so.
Like I say, speak when you have something true to opine about. Not everywhere is like the US where hand-waving misdirections by authorities to evade responsibility after the fact of a disaster seems to be the norm for as long as I can rember, starting with the JFK assassination Warren Commission. So, the Orange Revolution was the preparation step for the 5 years needed for Ukraine to make the necessary reforms. As the Orange Revolution did not take, the Maidan Coup, in 2014, was the “do over”.

As to FEMA they are aren’t in the business of immediate response (rescue/firefighting etc.) business and never have been. The State of Hawaii and it’s electric utility have known about the potential fire issues in that area for years. The regulatory incentive on that island was similar to what California put in place and upon which the left has doubled down on since Biden came to office: ‘climate change’. And that doesn’t mean controlled burns or cutting the verge. We should expect a death toll of 600-700, though if those ‘missing’ were actually in any of these structures incinerated there might be a lot of bodies that won’t be found or identified.

One only has to compare how hurricane disasters are handled by USA and Cuba. Best example of mishandling is hurricane Katrina. Cuba gets its share of hurricanes but from memory their hurricane casualties are minimal every time. Cuba takes it seriously and have pre-emptive emergency procedures in place. I get a feeling that relevant state and national authorities in USA know all about pronouns and have ensured that all minorities are appropriately represented within their respective organisations. Purpose of their existence and ability to perform is a secondary consideration.

I saw a video of a family that survived. They tried to drive away from the fire and just as they approached a intersection they could see the road to the left was clear with no smoke and blue skies. If you’ve ever visited or lived in Lahaina (I lived there in the early 90’s) you’d know the downtown historical area is very old with manly wooden structures. Newer structures have been built, some houses not burned down were concrete with slate roofing. The rich have several acres to themselves with big lawns and plenty of separation from the others. This was not a DEW attack, clearly a disaster just waiting to happen. Since Dole pineapple left the island the land was turned into a big pasture with grass imported to feed cattle. This grass grows like crazy and died out from the lack of rain. One spark is all it took. No emergency planning, no government over site, no nothing. Just another example of a government not of and for the people, but a government for itself.
As I stated in my previous post, you trying to block me and my family’s escape by blocking the road out will get you shot. Just as if the house is on fire and someone is intentionally blocking the door. I take that as your direct intention to kill me and my family.

There is a provincial bureaucracy called Wildfire BC. They fight the fires. Evacuation decisions are made by ‘regional district’ (in US ‘county’). Regional Districts are a bureaucracy but local. The first level is ‘warning to evacuate’, the second level is ‘mandatory evacuation’; national emergency law. The bureaucrats are conservative, they don’t want anyone killed. The system works, we have had a lot of practice lately!
Canada is hopeless about the Ukraine; the problem started in 1945, when Canada let in a depleted Ukr SS division, hard core nazis!
I was near ground zero in the 2007 Witch Creek Fire in SD county. Unlike the poor folks in Maui, we were well schooled by veterans of previous fires about what to expect. We had meetings every year with fire professionals about how to prepare. Rule no. 1 was to expect no help from Gov. Power went out and we never received an evac order. We were advised to have outr own plan and that saved our lives. We maintained own own resources and did not allow Gov to interfere. One neighbor kicked the Fire Dept out of his property at gunpoint. They demanded to commandeer his own fire equipment that he had purchased to protect his own property. When we egressed the area through the flames we ignored the Gov roadblocks directive to shelter in place at a school. They seemed utterly incompetent. We escaped the area using back routes upwind of the fire that I knew. Afterward, FEMA was an utter joke. There was some philanthropy including corporations that set up aid stations in the area. I can easily see how this happened. Without a lot of time getting prepared for the eventuality my property might have been lost and my family could have come to harm. None of the Maui residents that Ive seen on the news seemed to have any idea about the fire risk.
Where is Tulsi Gabbard? One would have thought she would be front and center on this one.

Saw a video Gabbard posted today august 20. she had to report for duty, mandatory training on the mainland, I think in Kansas?
In the US, we have the best politicians money can buy. (Money is over-rated.)
It’s also important to allocate some blame on those people, who when told to “shelter in place” did just what they were told to do without questioning what their own eyes were telling them.
The only reason the Soviet Union collapsed was that people learned to stop listening to their government.

i think the rot is deeper than acknowledged , not malice but incompetence and corruption and pure laziness of the entrenched politicians in hawaii

I’m writing this comment in response to a conversation I had with a close family friend about the situation in Hawaii. She said the governor (or the main guy in charge) had plans for modernization of the electric supply part and that it was being opposed by the natives. Her statement was that the natives weren’t a bunch of spineless pansies(they weren’t easy to deal with) and that it was difficult to get things done. Appreciate anyone contributing on the ground situation.
One thing I wanted to note is I did see someone whose opinion I generally trust say that not setting off the early warning alarms was in fact a rational response, as they are primarily a tsunami warning. Setting off these alarms would cause people to flee upland, towards the fires. They also felt the official was being scapegoated, which seems right when an utter systemic failure is aimed at one guy

Adding “historic” in front of random stuff is one of the dumbest thing Muricans do, and it’s a tough competition.
