Stephen produced a separate video from our conversation last Wednesday that focused on the CIA and on Hunter Biden. He started off asking me to comment on the following news item:
U.S. CIA Director William Burns said on Saturday that disaffection in Russia with the war in Ukraine was a once-in-a-generation opportunity to recruit spies – and that his agency was not letting it go to waste.
“Disaffection with the war will continue to gnaw away at the Russian leadership beneath the steady diet of state propaganda and practiced repression,” Burns, a former U.S. ambassador to Moscow, said in a lecture to Britain’s Ditchley Foundation in Oxfordshire, England.
Egads!!! Why announce this in public? (And yes, in the video I call Burns a moron.) Burn’s apparently has never played poker and is unfamiliar with the concept of keeping one’s cards close to one’s vest. In other words, don’t show your damn hand.
The Russians either are laughing uproariously or shaking their heads in disbelief in listening to this diplomat turned spy master reveal himself as a rank amateur. Russian “disaffection” with the war? The public opinion polls in Russia show the opposite to be the case. So does this mean that the CIA analysts are lying to Burns or is he refusing to read the information that is readily available in public? Either way, it is not a good look.
If you are inclined to think this was just a “one – off “mistake, think again. Burns also trumpeted the CIA’s alleged success in re-building a bungled spy network in China during an interview with NPR’s Mary Louise Kelly at the Aspen Security Forum last week:
“About a decade ago, China rolled up a lot of CIA operations in China. A dozen or more CIA sources were arrested or executed. Have you rebuilt?,” said Mary Louise Kelly, co-host of All Things Considered.
“We’ve made progress and we’re working very hard over recent years to ensure that we have a strong human intelligence capability to complement what we can acquire through other methods um on the Cyber front the recent,” said William Burns, director of the CIA.
For the love of God man! You don’t talk about Fight Club:
It is one thing to talk about the history of the CIA and activities with people who are long dead. But Burn’s comments about current operations is likely to spur counter-intelligence efforts by the Russians and the Chinese and dissuade potential foreign spies from putting their lives in the hands of a CIA led by such an incompetent.
Here is my chat with Stephen:
William F Buckley Jr.: “It had all the earmarks of a CIA operation; the bomb killed everybody in the room except the intended target!” Hopefully someone can tell me what incident he was referring to but I use it because its so relevant today, and can be extended as a description for US foreign policy.
It is the Age of Disinformation. I’d add that we live in an era of appearance. Narcissism rules, has become peer group pressure, and thus people act the way they think they should be perceived, from the schoolgirl on TikTok to the CIA chief on CNN.
The KGB version of the CIA’s ad – https://youtu.be/z-gr8yeVDMU
Hunter Biden is misunderstood in the way that Picasso was 🙂
Larry, your impression of the success/failure of the Russia/Africa 2023 Summit?
“The attempted assassination of Sukarno last week had all the earmarks of a CIA operation. Everyone in the room was killed except Sukarno.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukarno
If I had to guess:
20 July plot
“When the bomb detonated, it killed Brandt and two others, and injured the rest of the rooms occupants. Hitler’s pants were singed by the blast, and he suffered a perforated eardrum and conjunctivitis, but was otherwise unharmed.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_July_plot
Just a guess. Maybe there is another one?
I believe William F. Buckley Jr. was referring to the 1985 Beirut car bombing incident when he made that statement. The incident involved a truck bomb targeting Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, a prominent Shia cleric and Hezbollah spiritual leader in Lebanon. However, the bomb killed over 80 people but missed Fadlallah, leading Buckley to suggest it had the characteristics of a CIA operation due to its perceived precision in hitting only the intended target.
Your varied suggestions are terrific, motivation for a new TV series: “The CIA Always Doesn’t Get It’s Man’.
@ Michael,
Don’t get your hopes too high, I’m still waiting for a documentary or a movie based on the life of Jeffrey Epstein.
@Bittu 🙂
They always get their man when payola is involved.
Narricisists lack tru self-awareness. Burnz is just another jack-in-the-ass that is the deepstate nomenklatura.
For anyone who thought that the silly recruitment video was parody from the ‘Bee’, sorry it WAS real.

What could go wrong….
“What could go wrong?” The answer is in the wonderful title of the movie “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once” – of course, it would have to be another parody. Instead of seeing many possible negative futures and ending with the only good one, the CIA will see every good future and choose the only bad one instead.
He’s just posturing for the cameras to “prove” the CIA is “doing something”.
Neither he nor his minions need to believe a word of what he’s saying.
Normal people, like you, have that reaction. But these are not normal people. They do believe the all encompassing ‘Narrative.’ It is their cult, their reason for living, their god.
Understand that . It not only does explain what you observe about their actions, it makes it all more horrifying. It really is that bad.
Yes there are some who are fully psycopaths, who embrace the death cult because it gives them the cover, means for their proclativities to become real. But there are many ‘Хорошие немецкие солдаты’, ‘Gute deutsche Soldaten’ who are loyal to the demons giving the orders beacuse they obey orders … unquestionably.
Right on! You nailed it! The TRUTH of the matter is, with the morally bankrupt, warmongering, traitorous globalist rot in our government, with their diabolic rules that trash everything that is good in the world that must be obeyed, or the gulag for you, we’re on the WRONG SIDE! Thank God the Russia isn’t! They are the hope for the world to get out the darkness that our Government has embraced! I’m a Vietnam War Navy Vet of the Security Group Command (68-72). I don’t recognize our Military anymore that has been turned into a group of Woke Perverts promoting every kind of perversion and making a priority of the biggest con that is man-made climate change that exists for making a fortune for the Gore Green Goblins, the rest of us be damned! Pray God save us from this evil, and, IMO, the Russian Armed Forces are HIS MIGHTY HAND at work doing it as every victory they win on the battlefield is a dagger to the heart of the Globalist Rot that wants to enslave the world!
I’m just waiting for the day we see the 1st Tranny Division on parade in their flouncy dress uniforms, skipping gaily in step where other units march.
The wokerati will be so impressed on their very merry path to an equal opportunity war.
“… the 1st Tranny Division on parade in their flouncy dress uniforms, skipping gaily in step …”
Perhaps you know this:

From about 1969, certainly no later than 1971. Not just funny, 50 years later, but up-to-the-minute. Some of those Monty Python sketches had me rolling on the floor gasping for air from laughing so hard. “But try to tell that to the kids nowadays …” (oops, that was from At Last The 1948 Show.)
Best wishes.
Hi Larry I hate to bother you I looked for the Russian recruitment advertisement video you mentioned during the conversation can you kindly post a link in this post so people can see and enjoy it. Thanks
I’m not Larry but… https://sonar21.com/cia-chief-burns-descent-into-delusion/
Re: spyworthiness amongst the population
Simplicius’ latest is very informative, re: murmors of a second mobilization and some excellent polls. Whatever spy well Burns would hope to dip into looks pretty thin to me.
Of course it is, because Burns is just pandering to his boss and the media establishment telling them what they want to hear and affirming the official narrative that the Russian people are ready to turn on Putin with a 80%+ approval rating.
The only fairly intelligent reason Burns would be advertising this would be to sow suspicion within Russia’s ranks. But that’d then be more likely counterproductive than productive, since suspicion bears additional vetting as well as increased potential for feeding false info to Burnsy via double agents and an exposure of communication methods.
But what do I know? I break out in hives telling my wife little white lies.
Russian opinion poll data on the war is exhaustively covered in Simplicius’ latest post. It runs about 50/50 in favor overall, much less than Putin’s personal approval rating. Let’s not overegg that war approval point as part of showing what a dim bunny Burns is. Not being an American, I couldn’t care less how stupid Burns is in giving the game away for free — perhaps he learned the technique from Zelensky telegraphing Counteroffensive 2.0. Dimwits of a feather stick together.
But if you dig further, the poll results ‘for men only’ if well above the 50%. There’s quite a bit in the poll data and Simplicius thinks the pollsters themselves may be Ukraine biased (makes sense, who’s the info most valuable to?).
Polls are farcical. Did not have many in 1940 in Britain…….not sure people in the East End of London or Coventry or Southampton would have been ultra positive.
Polls are Advertising designed to tell people to fit in with the majority
I’ll quote directly from the article, ” Keep in mind, I believe the organization behind the surveys leans Ukrainian, so there could be some measure of subtle bias in the way it was carried out. But the results are still very interesting. ”
I didn’t really find the polling numbers convincing given the sample size, and there’s no information on which regions in the Russian Federation were polled. Overall I wouldn’t have made as much of a deal from the poll.
Just a little hint to I’ll bet a month’s pay on: I’ve looked over all of Biden’s artwork and there are very disparate styles in them. I’m sure he did the bubble art (how revealing) but the rest that are a cut above? Hmmm, doubtful.
Recognizing (from a bit of experience) that Soho art gallery dealings are the shadiest out there, over & undervaluations, bogus paperwork, every trick under the sun as far as playing the IRS & insurance companies goes, I’m pretty confidant that more than a few of those paintings were pulled from struggling artists who are always sitting in the gallery wings & rolodexes but just not ‘making it’ on their own. It’d be a ready made gallery racket just waiting for a racketeering Biden to show up.
Could be wrong, but something tells me…..nope
Modern “art” is a money laundering scheme. It’d be a surprise if the Biden weren’t involved.

I can’t believe Burns said that!!! If I were in China, working for Burns, involved in espionage, that would have sent me over the edge. He just called down the MSS on all of his agents and informants. Incredible !!!
I guess the CAI-proxies don’t want to anymore.
Exposures, defections, double agents, and surveillances are probably now increasingly in Russia and China.
The “squirrel action” gives rise to bad suspicions.
The dismissal of China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang may also have caused turbulence in this regard.
It all looks like a deciphered CIA-call for help, not strength.
Just hopeium and wishcasting like everything else coming out of DC these days. We are dealing with an elite who thinks narratives can win wars, recruit spies, or balance budgets and set-backs are incidentals. Actually whole population has succumb “fake it till you make it” should be a familiar saying.
My thoughts exactly! I went to the same schools as these shyster Alumni legacy turds. These overgrown adolescent academic lightweights have been legacy promoted their entire life and marinated in privilege.
Gets kind of distressing really, seeing what kinds of sh*ts people you thought of as “friends” or “amenable” when at University, have turned out to be in later life……
Really is sad looking at alumni reports and wondering how these aged slime balls emerged from the fresh-faced drinking buddies you once had
Exactly.
The point Larry makes in this piece is one which is grounded in the reality Based Community. As such, one of its core practical assumptions is that the audience for this narrative are the Russians and Chinese when in fact the real audience is the Western public who must be fed a constant diet of ever more fantastical and impractical bullshit to maintain The Official Narrative (TON).
Thus the current iteration of TON in which a “peace” summit is being used by the West where one of the two parties is not invited and will only be able to participate in any peace arrangements if it subjects itself to war crimes prosecution, gives up Crimea and other territories and receives no security guarantees as per its December 2021 proposals. The same Official Narrative, of which this CIA fantasy described in this piece is but a part, is also pushing that the Russian Federation is also seeking to find a way out because it is ‘losing’.
All of which is for Western public consumption only in order to maintain the fantasy narrative of the Western Oligarchical 1% and those completely lacking in gorm who service its needs.
In previous podcasts Larry has highlighted the dysfunctional nature of the CIA and the institutional inertia where what starts out from the sharp end at the bottom of the organisation as ‘this is a bag of shite’ changes as it makes its way up the hierarchy until when it reaches the top it has become ‘this is powerful stuff which no one can resist.’
As noted in this piece – https://www.theguardian.com/business/2006/mar/12/theobserver.observerbusiness5
“…..If only the facts matter, it shouldn’t matter where they come from. That undercuts the traditional justification for hierarchy: that the boss knows best. Facts force the boss to choose between being ‘in control’ and being right. Many choose the former.
All this sets up a bizarre corporate amnesia – a kind of conspiracy not to learn in which organisations find new ways of repeating mistakes in an endless loop.”
The key point, as Andrei Martyanov constantly reminds us, is that this is systemic across the West. Deliberately so. Over the past four or five decades what Michael Hudson identifies as the Western Oligarchy has made all its organisations and institutions, – their structures and processes – along with its populations in their own image by systematically expunging all experience, expertise, knowledge and gumption out of the system entirely.
The point of systemic organisation is to obtain outcomes – emergent properties – which are greater than the sum of the parts. Which was the point of the old 1920’s/30’s 2+2=5 (where the targets for the five year plan were met in four years) Soviet poster. Across every level in the West the oligarchy have achieved the exact opposite. Obtaining outcomes which are less than the sum of the parts because every sub unit right down to the lowest level is its own independent accounting and profit unit resulting in a constant process of the left hand not giving a FF what the right hand is doing.
Larry’s experience of this dysfunction and disintegration in his own [former] organisation – the CIA – is mirrored in example after example across the entire West at every level. From buses not using the bus station because one part of the plethora of separate operations is charging rent every time a bus uses the facility to inappropriate housing developments which overwhelm the road transport system because The Narrative believes what it wants to suit the short term convenience of the terminally myopic, and everything in between.
And you end up with unusable half built hospitals and jerry built not fit for purpose schools; costly and exorbitant weapons which don’t work and people with insufficient training being slaughtered for no other reason than the most sacred principle of those running the shit show is that they know best and anyone they consider beneath them should know their place and never contradict their Official Narrative on pain of permanent cancellation and outlawing from society.
Larry’s comment on CIA’s possible involvement in child trafficking is based on an official interpretation of its role. From what I understand from Ray McGovern, CIA is split into an analytical unit and an operative one. What Larry says about beaurocracy may make sense within the context of the analyst division but who’s to say that operatives on the ground don’t make money on the side by facilitating trafficking, and that the number of corrupt agents is so high that they effectively created an internal network within the CIA?
Our vermin leaders can ferret out any agents who can be bought off before they have barely applied. There are many of them and they are surprisingly smart, although they squander their smarts on rot. Not deep thinkers though, which suits the Swampites just fine. Then they get transferred to the narcotics production and trafficking businesses, false flags, wet work, sleazy activities, etc., because they are amply paid. Anyone suffering from chronic diseases like morals, honor, valor, integrity, etc., would be immediately expelled from The Psychopath Club lest they influence and lure away the more malleable ones with iniquitous minds and skills who will do any vile thing without question.
That is the typical pattern of a corrupt agency in which you have a by-the-book public facing portion (perhaps even a majority) with a corrupt silo running things for its own benefit from the inside.
One might think that a spook outfit in the secrecy business would have a professional PR dept to talk to the press and everybody else would keep a very, very ,low profile. What is it about the folks appointed as heads of govt departments that they feel the need to have their faces appearing on the telly?
Same goes for NATO. All through the Cold War, I scarcely recall the names of its secretary generals and you’d almost never see them giving press conferences, that was the job of spokesmen in the media dept. Someone ought to remind the current incumbent that the secretary’s job is to take the minutes, not formulate policy, which is the function of the member states.
I guess these days, the egos feel a crucial need of pandering and publicity to feel important. Pitiful…
A quick housekeeping question: is there an edit option for messages awaiting moderation? In a pre-coffee morning haze, I made a pretty embarrassing spelling mistake which must be corrected asap to protect my dignity.
Obviously Burns is flat out lying about recruitment operations in Russia and disaffection with the war. This is nothing more than propaganda and disinformation, an empty threat designed to get Russia to overreact and either crackdown hard creating discontent or spend counterintelligence resources, or drive a narrative in the West. This whole thing is likely just another example of a canned narrative pandering to “big guy 10% Joe” because he knows exactly what Biden wants to hear. He knows Biden’s prejudices and attitudes towards Russia, and he knows Biden doesn’t think anything has changed since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Military government in Niger stops uranium exports to France – EU threatens
According to media reports, the military government in Niger, which came to power following a coup, has banned the export of uranium and gold to France with immediate effect. The Africa Archives Twitter account said on Sunday:
“The military regime in Niger has banned the export of uranium to France with immediate effect. More than 50 percent of the uranium ore mined in Niger is used to fire French nuclear power plants. 24 percent of uranium imports from the EU come from Niger.”
https://test-rtde-tech.translate.goog/afrika/176601-militaerregierung-in-niger-stoppt-uranexport/?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=de&_x_tr_pto=wapp
The NATO intelligence services could not prevent these coups.
Are they facing a major fiasco in Africa with withdrawal?
Russia accelerates multipolar processes in Africa through squirrel’s “democratic games”. 🐿
France is having a bad year. Both at home and in the (former) colonies.
We are living through one of the hinge periods of modern history, and the speed events are unfolding is quite dizzying!
France is just reaping what it saw. Harvesting season in Western Europe is just starting, and is going to be long and yieldful.
Putin has opened a new front against NATO intelligence agencies and their derivatives in Africa.
For the EU, the energy shock absorbers could soon collapse.
An energy fiasco looms.
We’ll be seeing a lot more of this stuff in many regions of the world.
NATO thinks it can wage wars against Russia and China and there will be no push-back.
Coming soon: Cuban Missile Crisis 2. On steroids!
I have chosen a wrong time to quit coke.
No problem. Just switch over to Pepsi.
Burns is likely simply telling everyone, the CIA has no HUMINT whatsoever in China and Russia. They sterilized the place, or turned them to send this garbage back.
That does not mean MI6 is not busy – they are after all longer in the game.
Now that I think of it MI6 Kim Philby became KGB chief, a triple agent, not forgotten….
As Russia’s Glazyev noted, look at the sanctions list for who in NOT there, for high level assets. A few were recently picked up.
Was it ever anything other than a rogue, unaccountable agency? Drug smuggling, assassinations ( including JFK) and on and on.
As to the JFK family, it’s three down, one to go.
Did the muckamucks in Washing ever consider that the Russians and the Chinese, and for that matter the whole world, might decide to regime change the US Government? Does the Deep State in Washington believe, for real, that We the People support their in our face corruption and slaughter? Who would be opposed to a change from a fascist regime? These Intelligence people have lived too long to be and remain delusional.
no regime change for you. we, the RoW, would like your borders open until the English pop is a minority.
Many global CIA- and MI6-residences will become non-permanent.
The worst thing for a secret service is, when you no longer know who you are talking to –
who is who.
I’m starting to pity guys like Burns ; “decline in cognitive capacity” epidemic hit Washington really hard… it’s sad , such a brilliant individual wasted by “decline in cognitive capacity” … or it’s Hunter’s little white bag…
Anyway , I prefer the green ones ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kWHalsbZLk
The CIA should only focus on gathering Intel but is now in the Infowar business. Unfortunately, the U.S. public is the primary target.
Question is did Truman intend the CIA to be that which the NSC was later created to be……..
was it his intention to have a monolithic bureaucracy or had he intended an Analytical Pool to evaluate Intelligence from different organisations to give the White House (and Congress) a synthesis………
Clearly Allen Dulles thought he would do what J Edgar Hoover had done – and declare UDI and “State within a State”
With leaders like Burns, the Russians and Chinese won’t even need spies. They’ll get their intel directly from the director’s mouth.
I am skeptical how any virtuous victor in the race for the White House could even begin to proceed to dismantle the CIA.
My first supposition is that he would be found to have “died suddenly,” and there are just so many ways that are far less gruesome than John Kennedy’s murder.
The second thing that gnaws at me is Congress: Think of how the entire Democrat bloc has stood united against everything decent, and in favor of seemingly everything degenerate. This tells me of strings being pulled. The CIA pulls media strings, is it pulling Congressional ones? Would this same treasonous bloc stand up and defend and continue to demand funding for the CIA? Would it work to harm that mythical virtuous POTUS?
After all, RFK, Jr. is one of the most probable political figures in America to fall victim to an assassination attempt, and yet has been denied Secret Service protection. Is the Secret Service even trustworthy? (Was it in on the attempt against Ronald Reagan?)
meanwhile, $2 million++ spent protecting Jack Smith.
Billy No Mates strikes again, lol. To me, this just seems very similar to what Milley & Austin do during their press conferences: give some list of wonder weapons & talk up training – most folks with no knowledge of these things think it sounds like a major achievement. Its what Lt Col Tony Shaffer calls the “woke military” – by that he means that these public statements are just “virtue signaling” – hey, look, we’re doing something! Here is justification for those billions in tax dollars! Gives the appearance of transparency. Same concept here with Burns. He’s virtue signaling for the wealthy political/political donor class who gather at Aspen and convince themselves they’re fit to rule the world.
I imagine that the FSB/SVR are pretty up to speed with any shenanigans the US (or UK, EU, NATO) has going on in their bailiwick.
Col. Doug MacGregor made a comment about 6-7 years ago in an interview about Syria that I’ve never forgotten: “nobody knows the West like Vladimir Putin”. Nuff said.
Give Burns a break. He’s probably under a lot of pressure. Maybe he needs a summer vacation to relax a little, nothing strenuous, perhaps a canoe trip or something.
Yes, a boating excursion on the placid Potomac. A previous Agency chieftain did just that, in order to relax. I read in the news that his relaxation was permanent.
>>About a decade ago, China rolled up a lot of CIA operations in China<<
That 'roll up' resulted in the execution of over 100 U.S. assets in China. How did China learn about those spies? Was Hillary's e-mail server involved? Someone ought to investigate.
So where in the Constitution does it mention “CIA” ?
Just another executive branch agency that needs to be axed.
Not sure US Constitution mentions FBI either nor Abortion nor Overseas Imperial Military Garrisons, nor Federal ownership of territory within States, nor Federal Income Tax, nor an Elected Senate …………
Nor the FED, but yes the Treasury.
The basis for Glass-Steagall, breaking up the private central banks, which FDR already did, and Clinton repealed.
More than ever now urgent.
Next war please. Finally found some concrete numbers. The cheese eating surrender monkeys have 1500 French Special Op troops in Niger. And the Fourth Reich in Germany is talking about sending troops. The Nigerian military claims 230,000 troops. Wagner has +/- 1000 troops in Mali next door. What would be handy would be some Wagner types with captured Stingers near the Abuja international airport for when the Empire reinforces.

Hard times begin for the West in Africa- is this a resurrection of Africa?

“We will never support imperialism,” the speaker says in English, so that Europe and the U.S. can hear it clearly.

Hard times? Like not being able to steal as much as before? That’s tough.
It is not a mistake, Larry. It is part of the psy-op (it is all just one big psychological-op now) that has always assumed that the only way to win this war is by convincing Russians that the west is all powerful with terrifying actual weapons and also the ability to invade their people’s minds and hearts, and is even now whispering in their ears, and that therefore Putin should just give up and retreat from Ukraine while he still has a nation, relatively mentally as well as physically intact, and not quite yet about to betray him en masse.
This is why the offensive was trailed so luridly even if it did seem to be giving the game away in advance. The object was to try to build fear in Russian hearts.( Instead it just encouraged them build better defences- always a risk.)
The US is not giving up on this. It is all it has got. And it targets its own people too to persuade them of just how powerful it is and how it will win. It did not work in Syria (hello, Assad) and it will not work here. but if a songster is all you have…… and look how well it worked with covid- a good dry run. Words as weapons. But Russia has its own shamans…… Imagine being beaten at your own game by a weapon you know is not real! Or rather, you know yours isn’t…..
It’s like threatening with an empty gun. It can be very effective, until you run into someone with loaded one.
You can calm down, Larry. It’s highly doubtful that either Russia or China is unaware of American efforts to recruit spies in their countries. Burns probably assumes this to be the case.
You mentioned the Cuban Missile Crisis. One of the most humorous aspects of that era was how the Kennedy Administration established a back channel to the Kremlin by contacting a bar tender in Washington who was a known KGB agent. He tried to cover himself by acting like an anti-Communist, but his cover had been blown by the fact that the bar was favored by Soviet diplomats.

Gonzalo Lira needs urgent assistance and help. He is attempting to cross the border into Hungary to seek political asylum. Please forward to everyone in your network.
The U.S. State Department is fully aware of his status and it is unlikely they will help him. Same with the CIA.
Thank you.

Don’t they mean SBU ?
GONZALO LIRA UPDATE – no doubt many will be aware that GL has posted on YT, (both channels) & on Twitter today saying he’s out on bail, detailing his imprisonment (NOT good), & release pending trial on August 2. He was broadcasting from near a Hungarian border crossing & by now has either managed to cross into Hungary where he will apply for asylum or the Kiev ‘authorities’ will have arrested him . . . again & will no doubt disappear him for good this time. Good news . . . sorta. Better news will be if he reposts later today (??) meaning he’s safe in Hungary.
Cheers
I’ve posted all three videos here at Sonar21
