Russia’s Dirty Dozens Would Make Lee Marvin Proud

21 December 2022 by Larry Johnson 146 Comments

Mozart Group Training Ukrainian Troops from Newsweek

Count me amused by the Westerners voicing shock and outrage over the fact that Russia is using a group of former convicts to help fight the new Nazis in Ukraine. This was not Putin’s unique idea. He obviously is a Lee Marvin fan:

See the principle? If it is American convicts fighting Nazis, that is a good thing. But if it is Russian convicts doing the same thing in the 21st Century, it is baaad!!

But wait, there is more. Do you remember this scene from the HBO series, The Pacific?

Blood thirsty Marines who escaped from insane asylums and prisons? Sounds like potential recruits for Wagner.

Newsweek has its panties in a knot and is looking for a fainting couch as it decries Russia’s Wagner Group — a contract military unit (e.g., like Blackwater?) because it includes former Russian convicts:

The grinding assault on the city and its surrounding area is a rallying point for Russia’s military bloggers and propagandists, and a showcase of the capabilities of the Wagner Group and leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, one oligarch ally of President Vladimir Putin whose profile has increased dramatically since February 24.

Prigozhin and his Wagner fighters—their ranks swollen by the mass recruitment of Russian convicts—seemingly have another target in their sights: the Mozart Group NGO which is helping train Ukrainian troops and evacuating civilians from the front lines, including around Bakhmut.

https://www.newsweek.com/wagner-group-targeting-volunteers-ukraine-mozart-group-russia-andy-milburn-1765321

The Mozart Group is under the command of a retired U.S. Marine Colonel, Andrew Milburn. It is trying to train Ukrainian troops to fight the Russians. Shades of The Pacific! A friend of mine, a retired Marine General, knows Andy but only worked with him after both left active duty. My friend says Milburn is a solid guy. Retired Colonel Milburn insists that his Mozart Group has nothing in common with the Wagner Group:

Milburn dismissed Prigozhin’s description of Mozart as a private military company. “People call us a PMC because that’s all they have as a frame of reference,” he said. “We don’t carry weapons, our tasks are humanitarian—and I mean, seriously, legally humanitarian.”. . .

The Mozart Group’s name was intended as a counterpoint to Wagner, whose fighters adopt neo-Nazi imagery and have developed a reputation for extreme brutality in operations in Syria, Libya, and the Central African Republic. Previously used as a deniable, shadow arm of Russian foreign policy, the group has emerged as one of Moscow’s more effective and feared formations in Ukraine.

https://www.newsweek.com/wagner-group-targeting-volunteers-ukraine-mozart-group-russia-andy-milburn-1765321

Milburn, to his credit, speaks candidly about the dire plight of the Ukrainian forces fighting in the meat grinder of Bakhmut:

“Bakhmut is like Dresden, and the countryside looks like Passchendaele,” he said, referring to the German city destroyed by allied bombing in World War II and the infamously muddy and bloody World War I battlefield. “It’s just a horrible and miserable place.”

Ukraine closely guards its casualty figures, but its forces are believed to be suffering badly around Bakhmut.

“They’ve been taking extraordinarily high casualties,” Milburn said of the units training with Mozart. “The numbers you are reading in the media about 70 percent and above casualties being routine are not exaggerated.”

Despite their “tremendous morale,” Milburn said the defenders “have an acute ‘regeneration problem,’ which means getting new recruits into the line as quickly as possible.” This means those being thrown into the fight have little beyond basic training.

“Typically about 80 percent of our intake who are coming off of the line have never even fired a weapon before,” Milburn said. “We’ve got our work cut out for us.”

The Mozart Group’s training mission is akin to the crew of the Titanic trying to bail water from the sinking ship with a thimble. None of their training will make a bit of difference on the battlefield in terms of the tactical situation with one exception — their training may help some of the poorly trained and equipped Ukrainians survive.

Milburn minces no words in confirming the catastrophic casualties the Ukrianian forces are suffering — 7 out of every ten soldiers are killed or wounded. It underscores the reality that the Russians are firing six artillery rounds for every one round fired by Ukraine.

Here is a Ukrainian unit confirming Col. Milburn’s assessment. They are not cowards. They are fed up with crappy leadership and indequate supplies:

“This is a message we are conveying to the command of the Airborne Troops and the command of the AFU from the 3rd Airmobile Company of the Separate Airmobile Battalion of the 25th Secheslav Airmobile Brigade.

We were sent on a combat mission to hold separate combat positions. We did not receive proper armament and artillery support. As a result, 70% of the company was killed or wounded. We did not have and do not have combat equipment and proper armament. We did not even have the equipment to evacuate the injured, due to which several wounded did not survive.

We spent more than a month in the trenches transmitting coordinates never fired upon by artillery. Platoon sergeants fled their positions in the first days and were transferred by Chief of Staff Kipinach, now acting battalion commander.
We are demanding the transfer of the entire unit.”

Here is the video:

So the United States is sending billions of dollars of military gear and weapons to Ukraine and the guys on the front lines are not getting any of it? Marjorie Taylor Greene is right. We need an audit. What the hell is Zelensky and his gang of thieves doing with all of the U.S. aid?

You are correct. Webster’s just defines an oligarchy as “… a form of government in which the ruling power belongs to a few persons” and an oligarch as “…any of the rulers of an oligarchy”. Being rather ambiguous, the terms can be broad or narrow in scope. Because few people read the dictionary and the terms “sound” somewhat nefarious, there is the implication that oligarchs are evil. The same thing happens with the term conscript. Conscript and draftee have the exact same definition. The US has interchangeably used the term conscript and draftee dating back to Colonial times. However, the term draft has become the predominant usage in the US since WWII and probably most Americans never heard of a conscript until now with the implication it is an evil sounding practice done only by Russia. Propaganda is usually a long ways from reality.

Larry’s article is sooooooo good. I am going to reprint it on my site (with comment) because it gets into American hypocrisy in such a big way. And also because I have been writing about the Wagner Group.

I would add: Russia’s pluralistic multiparty constitutional democracy is a dictatorship. America’s duopoly is a democracy, although not constitutionally such (rather, a republic). Government of the Rich, by the Rich, for the Rich.

As for Lee Marvin, as a Marine in World War II, he was involved in more than 20 landings on Japanese occupied islands. My Dad used tell me that since the Marines never made that many landings, Marvin must’ve been acting on his own initiative.

The British Regular Army in its heyday frequently included released convicts. Serving in the Caribbean in the eighteenth century was so risky owing to disease that men who were sentenced to hang were sometimes given the option of enlisting in a regiment stationed there.

Even in recent times, the British Army has had explicit programs to enlist ex convicts. Its recruitment site even says too that a criminal record does not disqualify someone from joining.

Wellington even described his army as the “scum of the earth” although the full quote actually goes on to describe what fine fellows the army made of the convicts and others who had joined up.

All this projection and hypocrisy in the west. The Russians are just doing what all effective armies through history have done. Of course, our own multi sexual identity, trans LBGT+, climate change friendly armies are a definite break from the past and it does remain to be seen if that model would work on a real battlefield against a real enemy.

My best guess is that the missing weapons are headed in three directions: west, to Albania (and thence to Kosovo), east, to Iran, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan, and south, to the states of the Sahel, all with the discreet complicity of the United States government. It’s all about fomenting future conflicts in flashpoint areas (e.g., the Balkans) and in places where the Russians and the Chinese have legitimate security interests (e.g., the Central Asian republics and Africa).

It would be equally interesting to trace the paths of the internal organs of harvested Ukrainians.

Any news reporting originating from US sources is not credible re TIME. They have no credibility. In fact, it is not news: US media scripts the narrative according to how the Pentagon and private intelligence agencies want the narrative to run. In this case on Ukraine.

Anyone notice Ukraine’s new flag? It has the original blue on top with the bottom half being yellow. Yellow for cowards under a blue sky. The new flag has Raytheon and Lockheed Martin stenciled on it.

Absolutely no one can even imagine what it must be like for Wagner PMCs to be slugging it out with Ukrainian cannon fodder and foreign mercs in eastern Ukraine. We probably see only 10 percent of the actual killing. It must be brutal. And now for a little treat:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-p8XZw_StQ

How will the additional $44 billion Zelensky came calling for on the US congress get dropped in Ukraine? Fraud is spelled f-r-a-u-d.

All eyes off the US Biden regime and politicians. These people are in charge of nothing. They are the amplified entertainment show. The real action is the flow of money. “Fairy dust” magic money flowing from an open spigot out of the central banks. Biden, Harris, Pelosi, US congress and senate are inconsequential.

Suggestion: Americans concerned about what is going on in Ukraine who are increasingly rejecting the corporate criminal syndicate in Washington that has privatized government might find it easier to migrate to Russia to set up enclaves of subcultures. The Russians are moving to make migration easier for Americans.

Zelensky Inadvertently Admitted That The Vast Majority Of Humanity Doesn’t Support Ukraine
    December 22, 2022 NEWS

Taken together, Zelensky’s keynote speech: revealed his side’s supremacist views vis a vis the Global South; prematurely declared a propaganda victory where there veritably isn’t one; tacitly admitted their failure to manipulate the vast majority of humanity; implied a redoubling of lies to reverse the aforesaid; and exposed the unprofessionalness of his information warfare campaign.

Many Hollywood scripts feature Americans who were walking around in Nazi Germany (before the US declared war against Germany). Without those (imagined) actors from the ‘free world’ the greyness of Nazi Germany would kill any Hollywood plot that thrives on absolute white (American) vs. black (Nazi) contrasts. Hollywood needs the projection of its ‘the good, the bad & the ugly’ narratives against the bleak & desolate background of a war to attract the attention of the (uninformed) public. Nowadays the greyness of Nazi Ukraine at war is posing the pro-active MSM for a repeat of the ‘White Helmets’ fake story in war torn Syria. That’s why the ‘Mozart group’ was invented. But the deliberate slowdown of the war of attrition by general Surovikin causes all these invented Hollywood mock-ups to fall apart or to be exposed to reality.

During the period Kalingradsky oblast’s “economy” was evaluated as “who knows”, whilst Ukraine was evaluated as “thank fuck it’s their problem”

Not all the audience on Independence Square in February 2014 resented the Jewish lady dispensing beneficences even after forgetting the salt; some observed an increase in the “Ukrainian economy bez platna”, whilst some others observed that some waddle so much they don’t feel the need to ponder what is for afters, home or away.

Since the creation of the Foreign Legion in 1831, recruits could be hired under a “declared identity”, an assumed identity that guaranteed their anonymity. This measure, which “made it possible to recruit people quickly without having to verify their identity and thus gave some a second chance”
The Legion allowed the escape of many worries for those left behind by a war or a regime in difficulty. This is why we see on this picture a very strong majority of Germans (large recruitment after the two world wars)

Kiev can’t expect to be treated better than NATO allies since that would irredeemably break the bloc’s trust in its American leader, nor can it expect that anti-Russian alliance’s European members to run through the rest of their already dwindling stockpiles at the expense of their minimum security needs. Biden probably didn’t intend to, but he inadvertently exposed Zelensky as a delusional beggar who still doesn’t recognize the military-industrial limitations at play in this proxy war that his country is fighting.

America is Numero Uno in the world when it comes to the wielding of raw power, the so-called “Do as I say not as I do” syndrome. And here is the framework invented for the world to follow: “The International Rules Based Order”. Updated at Washington morning coffee-break time every day to outlaw anything the USA hasn’t found to be to its advantage in the previous 24 hours.

Then there’s Zelensky and his cohorts to whom lying for money is second nature. The list of things in Ukraine outlawed by these criminals, people offed or “re-assigned”, the burning of 100 million Russian-language books, the banning of all opposition etc, supreme racism, is handily detailed as a sort of summary by Thierry Meyssan of Voltairenet. A very good English translation of his original post in French is available here:

War is mass murder for the gain of the oligarchs and ruling class. So it seems criminals would be the perfect personnel for the job. But to truly viscous, nasty and unconscionable criminals are those the oligarchs and ruling class who start the war.

“Why, of course, the people don’t want war,” Goering shrugged. “Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship.”

If it is first aid, sure. If it is how to bravely run into an artillery barrage firing their rifle at (???), it (as you say) only lengthens the war and delays its inevitable end putting more meat in the grinder.

Mozart should teach Ukrainians how to surrender and get out of the fight without their Nazi overminders shooting them in the back.

Instead, Mozart is extending a battle to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian, that actually is strengthening Russia.

How old are these guys, they chose Mozart because Russians chose Wagner. Kid level behaviour but good PR gimmick, raise your profile by association to that you claim to resent. Though imitation is, the sincerest form of flattery.

The confirmation of casualty rates is enlightening.

I’m not sure what to make of the Ukranian forces, are they on drugs, forced to fight or just ridiculously brave? Anyone who has been in combat knows that to lose 70% or more of your unit and still be standing ready to fight is almost beyond belief.

You are going back to the Spartans or Sikh Armies to get anywhere near sustained courage and willingness to literally fight to the last man.

The Soviets took massive casualties in wars, in particular WW2, and of course the Ukranians were Soviets, there are very very few people on earth who can take those casualties and keep going. Other than Spartans, Sikhs and Slavs I can’t think of any.

Note these are casualties in an offensive/ defensive war against a part of the country that does not want to be part of Ukraine. It’s easier to understand this level of courage if the land was that of people who wanted to be in Ukraine, but maybe that’s the way they see it, or that Ukraine is gone if they can’t stop the Russians. I wonder what they are told? I wonder if the soldiers are fed stories of Russian war crimes and rapes and torture to drive them on.

What a horrific waste of human life. May those responsible for causing this war rot in hell.

China looks to have a COVID outbreak right now, I wonder how that will affect things especially as the EcoHealth official who worked at Wuhan lab wrote a book showing how COVID is an American bio weapon.

In which case the US is simultaneously waging war against both it’s competitors, physical and economic war against Russia and Bioweapon and milder economic war against China.

Both countries are under horrific attack.

    Iran up next.

One of the Duran shows a while back featured a Canadian named Alex – who was running a news site out of China. Alex lived in Monte Carlo for 20 years and has a lot of connections with people living there still.
He said that there was an extensive “Monte Carlo” battalion in Monte Carlo – that one of every 5 Lamborghinis had Ukrainian license plates.
Or in other words, that MC is being used to launder stolen aid.
I wish I could find this unbelievable.

“Other than Spartans, Sikhs and Slavs I can’t think of any.”

The Japanese in WW II immediately come to mind as potential candidate.

Then again, in August of 1945, Japan’s 900,000 strong Kwangtun Army, located in Manchuria, basically surrendered en masse the moment a Red Army arrived.

Regardless of culture or tradition, it often depends on the circumstances I think, whether armies, or their individual units within, are willing to fight to death, or only, fight to the pain.

Hopefully Russia lowers the boom soon and puts these ukraianians out of their misery. These guys are obviously heavily propagandized moreso than even we are in the West WRT to this conflict and I admire their grit but it’s such a waste of men. This war can only end one way as Russia has too much power and it’s an existential threat to Russians/Russia unlike say Afghanistan was for them and they can’t lose. They’ll “Grozny” the whole damn country if need be.

    “former Russian convicts”

By calling them this, it implicitly legitimizes the Russian justice system.

But but but Russia is a corrupt dictatorship! How could they have a legitimate justice system? Anyone imprisoned must be presumed to be innocent!

    I’m confused…

We are witnessing the total failure of the liberal so-called “democratic” form of government. That system is spinning out of control as a we witness a mega conspiracy gather and openly conspire within the alleys of government to defraud the American people of its tax money in broad daylight and nobody can do sh*t about it. On the contrary, the MMS conditioned masses applaud their robbers with content and gusto and many are happy to see their money go, allegedly, to Ukraine. In reality, that money will be laundered back through the meanders of the financial system by oligarchic financial wizards and funneled to the appropriate invested parties, mainly members of the US establishment and other elements of the plutocracy that controls the deep state structures.
The American “democracy” has morphed into a monster worse than G. Orwell’s Big Brother. It’s a nightmare and I’m beginning to despair to see it let go someday of its grip on Western societies short of a bloody revolution that will uproot the whole American system from its roots to build a new one. Something akin to a new democratic “Bolshevik” revolution because the ills are way beyond reform.

“After World War II, in Algeria, the French Foreign Legion was full of former SS officers, and German was the most common language. From my father, who was there.”

I THINK it was during the Indochina war (1945-1954) : in some units orders were given in German only.
If you read “We few”, Nick Brokhausen’s absolutely riveting tale of his tours of Vietnam around 1970 you’lllearn that he fought with Montagnard tribemen who were fluent in German… cos they fought with them in the 50’s against the VC.

I was so incensed at the abomination that happened last night in D.C. that I wrote my “conservative” Republican congressman. Was I too lenient? Here is the message:

“I have never had a problem in the past with the job you have done as a US Representative.
How did you feel after viewing the congressional gathering last night? Is aid to Ukraine really the most important issue facing our leaders? What about the people?
Are you politicians drugged, brainwashed, hypnotized or just plain weak and complicit? Do the Democrats and rinos going ga ga over a Ukrainian beggar, grifter, con man, hater of Orthodox christianity and murderer cause you to re-think our foreign policy and veracity as a nation? There are numerous problems and issues being mishandled by our politicians and entrenched bureaucracy that are just as dangerous to us as a nation as our failure to pursue peace in Ukraine.
Don’t rely on media, FBI, CIA,, or associates for your “facts.” They are all unreliable.
Listen, but verify carefully. Truth is the antidote for all of the evil and fiction emanating from D.C.”

I did not mention Sonar21.com or any other. Should I have done so? This is not the last message I intend to send him. I will continue to evaluate my approach to him. He has only begun to feel the heat.

Is the Wagner group recruitment of convicts saying something about values between Russia and West. I believe if convicts serve with honor, they can earn freedom. In the West the Vice President of America was famous for refusing to allow convicts from leaving prison because the state of California would not have enough slave labor.

We will never know where the money is going because the FTX affair will never go to trial. So Marjorie Taylor Green and all the other politicians of all flavors can just f off into the sunset. Really, do you believe that these pieces of garbage are truly interested in serving their constituents? Did you know that back in 2019 both side of the aisle passed Statement 56 of the Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board (FASAB) which said they could keep secret books? Ha ha ha ha ha, Marjorie Taylor Greene is right. We need an audit. What the hell is Zelensky and his gang of thieves doing with all of the U.S. aid? LMFAO!

Ukraine opened prisons early on in the conflict, including for bloodthirsty criminals fighting at the front. And they are no more criminal than the neo-Nazis! As also usually read here and comments and very well, western propaganda and in particular the complaints from Ukraine are nothing more than projections! As we have already seen in robberies, in war crimes with the ex-libris Bucha, in the lack of ammunition and ill-prepared troops, in the number of cannon fodder casualties, in the mistreatment of prisoners of war and their assistance, often even filmed, etc. The mirror has always been a great advertising tool.

And still on the subject of yesterday’s post, does anyone remember the name of someone in the US who came to be called the new Sun Tzu of the 21st century?

Exactly what’s wrong with using convicts to fight in the battlefield? Those convicts are given a chance to redeem themselves by being useful to their country. Keeping them in prison costs money, they are not economically productive in it. It sucks up public money, so better give them a chance to do some work and contribute to society, yes? Being a non-western person who never fully bought into the whole skewed western concept of “human rights”, I’m always of the opinion that it’s better to force convicts to do some work, not quite gulag-level of course, but whatever’s next to it. I always think it’s psychologically better for them and readies them to re-enter society once their prison term is over.

    Ballad of Jesse James

    https://youtu.be/UFxgeuf3QL4

    Jesse went to his death with a hand on his breast;
The devil will be on his knees,
He was born one day in the County of Clay
He came from a solitary race

This song was made by William R Ganshade,
As soon as the news did arrive,
He had sworn there was no man, with the law in his hand
Who could take Jesse James while alive

Jesse James was a man who killed many a man,
    He robbed the Glendale train,
And the people they did say, for many a mile away,
It was robbed by Frank and Jesse James.

Where is all that money going? Doubt if this is a revelation to most reading or commenting. People here clearly have knowledge & experience with conflicts of this nature.

I’ve seen figures that Ukraine supposedly has 200,000 combat-ready troops and somewhere around 600,000 more. Some are raw conscripts but many are involved in various types of support. Takes several soldiers to support one combat warrior or trench dweller, whichever may be the case. Also, if it’s anything like Afghanistan, there are thousands of ‘ghost soldiers’ collecting salaries. They may have been on the books and later killed or injured (or just made up). The Ukraine military understandably gives very little info on casualties, but this does also allow ‘someone’ to continue to collect salaries.. especially if no audit (and, like the Big Guy, the commanders usually keep a healthy percentage), so it’s in their interests to inflate those troop numbers if they’re not paying the bill.

Obviously the MIC is getting their share and I’m sure some funds are just rerouted back to where it came from, some are kept by the Oligarchs, etc. and some weapons are sold before they can be destroyed by the Russians, but that figure may not be a large percentage. Zelensky says he needs somewhere between $7B and $10B a month for all that (not including more weapons), AND to operate an entire country with severely reduced income while it’s infrastructure is being continually damaged.

Not hard to understand why they want to keep this going as long as American taxpayers are willing to pay up. Zelensky says he has a ‘peace plan’ (probably provided to him upon arrival), but he isn’t, and won’t be, negotiating with Russians. A plane was sent to summon him for another theatrical appearance in Congress to keep the money flowing. Now that they have a commitment for more funding they may back out of places like Bakhmut or Marinka, but will continue using mercs to probe Russian lines where they see weakness.

Sirovikan doesn’t seem interested in unnecessarily risking troops and materiel they’ve invested in and doesn’t seem like either side has an interest in expanding this beyond the former Ukrainian borders. Soooo….. there may not be a big arrow offensive. Putin may decide to just grind on while waiting for the European and American economies to deteriorate.

Western attitudes have undergone severe changes as well. There is a typical account from the 1930s Puget Sound of a moonshiner sentenced to two years of jail being released during the day to do odd jobs, meet locals and eventually settled in the community. Society used to have sufficient trust and moral basis to accomplish what we now entrust to an untrustworthy government because people themselves have become less human. Aforementioned perp also went to live and work on the sheriff’s farm with two other prisoners. All were pleased with the situation. Nobody in the community had a hissy fit. We’ve lost so much and gained trinkets. Other cultures have not been so foolish and our immediate ancestors would understand. Don’t expect the west not to copycat soon, but it won’t be the same because it can’t be in a degraded society.

    Mozart group:
“We don’t carry weapons, our tasks are humanitarian—and I mean, seriously, legally humanitarian.”. . .
    Yet he sez:
“Typically about 80 percent of our intake who are coming off of the line have never even fired a weapon before,” Milburn said. “We’ve got our work cut out for us.”

Then what is Mozart training new recruits for? Kitchen cleaning, peeling potatoes and other household chores?

About Larry C. Johnson

I am a bona fide Son of American Revolutionaries. At least 24 of my ancestors, men and women, fought to free the American Colonies from British rule. Some died for the cause of liberty. Though two and a half centuries have passed since my great grandfathers and grandmothers took up arms, the principles they fought for remain valid and relevant to the 21st Century. This blog is dedicated to the pursuit of truth without regard to partisan advantage. I welcome like minded patriots.
