Another canary in the mineshaft sending out signals that oxygen is in short supply is this article from Friday’s Washington Post, U.S. intelligence says Ukraine will fail to meet offensive’s key goal. The article is a stunner. Here are some highlights:
The U.S. intelligence community assesses that Ukraine’s counteroffensive will fail to reach the key southeastern city of Melitopol, people familiar with the classified forecast told The Washington Post, a finding that, should it prove correct, would mean Kyiv won’t fulfill its principal objective of severing Russia’s land bridge to Crimea in this year’s push.
The grim assessment is based on Russia’s brutal proficiency in defending occupied territory through a phalanx of minefields and trenches, and is likely to prompt finger pointing inside Kyiv and Western capitals about why a counteroffensive that saw tens of billions of dollars of Western weapons and military equipment fell short of its goals.

You do not have to be Clausewitz or Sun Tzu to realize that an offensive that is not accompanied by air superiority and effective mobile artillery and mobile air defense would fail against an entrenched, heavily armored opponent. Vehicles trying to tip toe thru a mine field while the Russians have zeroed their artillery on those approaches is nothing short of a suicide mission.
“Russia has three main defensive lines there and then fortified cities after that,” he said. “It’s not just a question about whether Ukraine can breach one or two of them, but can they breach all three and have enough forces available after taking attrition to achieve something more significant like taking Tokmak or something beyond that.”
The bleak outlook, briefed to some Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill, has already prompted a blame game inside closed-door meetings. Some Republicans are now balking at President Biden’s request for an additional $20.6 billion in Ukraine aid given the offensive’s modest results. Was reading that the US has OKed Danish and Dutch F-16’s to go the Ukraine, the very nuclear capable versions that the Russians have already stated are a red line. So it would seem the White House faction is still trying to push ahead and test escalation.

The F-16s in question are 40 year old early models with some upgrades and with most of their design flying hours already expended. They are available now because they are being replaced by F-35s and if not sent to Ukraine would otherwise be destined for the scrapyard.
Trying to present these old worn out aircraft as “game changers” is exactly the kind of disinformation they accuse others of. Except, the target of this disinformation is the Western public, not the Russians, who know better.

Are they being provided free of charge, or is Ukraine to be billed for them?
If Ukraine is to pay for them, how much, given that their book value now can be little more than their scrap value plus something for their few remaining flight hours.
Who is paying for the training?
The pilots and technicians need to be trained. Who is paying for this, the countries providing the aircraft, facilities and trainers, or Ukraine?
Is NATO feeding off the dying body of Ukraine before its demise?
They’ll be used to launch storm shadows and the like from outside of Russian radar range, which means I think they’ll need to operate from Kansas City or Adelaide.

With only 8 Ukrainian pilots competent in English it is hard to see who will a) fly

There never was a belief that Ukraine could win through if the Russians stood their ground. The intention behind all the advance warning, hype, and promise of wonder weaponry including doom laden dates pushed out in advance, was that Russian troops would panic and flee. (The tension alone would become unbearable. This psychological attack was carefully planned!). The so called great Ukrainian counter-offensive would never actually have to be fought. They would just roll on through the land unopposed, for western cameras.
Ukraine was the worst offender here insisting to Biden that there would be a collapse of the Russian government by now, and all those tasty Russian resources would at last fall under US remote control.
No one including Zelenskiiy believed Ukraine could actually win any stand up war here….. unless, of course, NATO could be dragged into the fight outright and for real (although NATO’s great fear is not of World War III but that the whole NATO concocted facade will be revealed like the Wizard of Oz behind the green curtain, standing naked and shivering while all its super duper weaponry crashes and burns.
Russia must be wondering if a deal that allows western Ukraine to join NATO is really such a threat to it at all. For NATO the real threat is Ukraine, not Russia. If it does have to take Ukraine into NATO, how does it stop Ukraine bouncing us all into a europe wide war that NATO will lose? Anyway, why would Russia stop at the Dnipro now? It has paid so much, it may as well take all of Ukraine and have a direct NATO border with Poland et al. If the west continues to throw every able bodied Ukrainian on the fire there won’t; be a serous resistance to fight an internal insurgency. You would almost think NATO and Russia were on the same side, and that the enemy of them both was Ukraine.
Those pesky Russians never act the way NATO experts want them to. They retreat when NATO expect them to stand their ground, and stand their ground when NATO expect them to retreat.

This whole driving-foreign-vehicle-to-the-front talk, reminded me of an anecdote about driving foreign vehicle to the front. A Soviet tank, to be exact.
Some decades ago, Egypt fought a war with Israel. They used Sovied made equipment, including some tanks with markings in Russian. Eqyptian tankers did not speak Russian, nor did they have proper training. That wasn’t considered too big of a problem because tanks were simple machines back in the day, and Russian manuals had a set of procedureds that could be followed without understanding all the markings on the buttons.
What those tankers did not know is, that standard Soviet power-up procedure included turning on the heating element. Their lack of foreign language understanding, and proper training, resulted in driving a tank in the desert with heating turned on. I forgot futher details, but I remebered that they were getting out of tanks on every possible occasion, in order to cool off. Some must have paid with their lives this language problem. Israel captured some of those tanks, and modified them in multiple ways, including complete removal of heating element.
This whole F-16 training odyssey sounds more surreal than the story about driving in the desert with the heating on. I suggest they put Post-it Notes all over the cockpit, and promptly send all those Tom Cruises on their meeting with Bandera.
Just label all the controls in Ukrainian. Just don’t label the red ‘overload – blow plane prior to capture’ button with ‘reset’ and all will be hunky dory. That was the mistake they made with the Afghan army.
