Russia’s aerial attack on the Ukrainian city of Khmelnytskyi is catching quite a bit of attention because of reports of a spike in Gamma rays following multiple, massive explosions. Educated speculation believes that the increase in Gamma radiation may be a consequence of Russian bombs blasting British supplied depleted uranium rounds into dust.
The photo above shows the intact weapons storage facility just outside Khmelnytskyi taken some time before the Russia strike. Khmelnytskyi sits 217 miles to the west of Kiev, which means these strikes were most likely carried out by cruise missiles, such as the Kinzhal or Iskander. These strikes also provide vivid proof that Ukraine’s anti-missile air defense system is non-existent or disabled in and around Khmelnytskyi.
Let’s look at some of the video evidence. There were at least three bombs that struck this weapons depot. The first strike comes at 4:29 am (see the first video below, which shows the three strikes). That strike apparently ignited secondary explosions from ammunition and explosives stored at the targeted facility. There is a second blast recorded at 5:07 am followed by a massive explosion at 6:10 am, resulting in a black mushroom cloud towering over Khmelnytskyi.
The following photo shows the aftermath of the strikes. The big crater in the upper left hand part of the image obliterated a couple of buildings and forests. Maybe this attack, with multiple missiles, will kill the tired narrative that Russia has run out of missiles and is scraping the bottom of the barrel.
It is not clear whether or not depleted uranium shells were vaporized. What is certain is that Ukraine lost an enormous quantity of munitions of various types that cannot be easily or quickly replaced. It also is noteworthy that Russia has been carrying out these kinds of strikes, not all with the same level of success, at multiple sites throughout Ukraine for the last eight days. Whatever small advances Ukraine has managed on the flanks of Bakhmut, they do not compensate for the massive loss incurred at Khmelnytskyi. This is a graphic reminder to the Ukrainians west of Kiev that they are at war and that Ukrainian military facilities are not safe.
Apparently the local population is panicking at the thought of DU dust fallout.
I have no pity for them at this point.

I agree completely. The ugly reality is that most people do what they are told. When the power behind authority turns to evil, even the most intelligent and educated (and I don’t mean paperwork credentials) take years and decades to figure it out, and all too often they decide to profit from it rather than rock the boat. The best explanation for the increase in “background radiation” (not fallout!) is that dust has been spewed into the air, and that raises the background radiation temporary. The assumption is that any dust spewed into the air would do the same.
Btw: background radiation in Ternopil is now quoted at 0.13 uS/h which compares to about 1 uS/h in Denver Colorado. (The US city with the highest background radiation)

There was spike in γ radiation starting ~ 2 days before the Russian attack. It did not rise after the attack.
The γ spike likely came when the DU munitions came into the area, which would have been a day or two before the Russian attack. The amount of DU did not increase or decrease after the explosion. The material just dispersed, and now will go where the wind takes it. I am sure that the Russians were aware of the munitions transfer into those warehouses, and hurried to the attack.

Where are these gamma ray detectors located? Gamma radiation declines by a factor of 10 every meter fron the source so just how much shielding had to be destroyed – without damaging the detectors- to be significant. I sure hope no one asks because that would violate the bs, the narrative, being pushed for NPC consumption.
It doesn’t work that way. No matter how thick, shielding can’t stop 100% of particles from tunneling across to the outside. Additionally, every atom emits gamma radiation at specific energies, a detector only needs to see ONE gamma ray at that specific energy to know what it came from.

I doubt the explosion was great enough to vaporize the DU rods. It was huge, but not intense enough. I’ve read a lot about this munition. It is not highly dangerous, but its not safe either. Upon supersonic impact on steel, it vaporizes into a torch as it burns through, leaving behind contaminated particles. Here is a good summary from the EPA:

Metallic uranium is combustible. It burns producing uranium oxide. This material forms very fine particles that can be dispersed by wind. When inhaled, they are assimilated into bones by the same route that calcium takes, as they are chemically similar. Inside the bone, the alpha radiation inflicts serious damage on the bone marrow rapidly causing cancer.

Highly dangerous to me means uranium waste, sarin gas, anthrax ect. Aluminum burns too and is used for rocket fuel, but is also difficult to ignite. During ammo dump explosions, even lots of regular HE munitions do not explode as they are thrown a mile away.

I don’t think there is proof in the gamma spike pudding. The spikes shown on many sites, i.e. the most excellent Simplicius, show gamma increases around 11 May; and appear to be mildly above background. Furthermore, t’aint much gamma radiation emitted by depleted U-35. A majority is alpha radiation and daughter-produced beta particles. Which is why internal organs are affected after inhaling or ingesting DU dust.

We had a very curious incident. On Bornholm (island in Baltic sea) a small earth quake was recorded. However GEUS (Danish Geological Surveys) couldn’t pinpoint the origin and then someone suggested it was a controlled explosion in Poland?
That was soon dis-regarded and now the official explanation is we don’t know, but maybe some phenomenon with skies. Bear in mind no news outlet in DK has reported these blasts, so as far as official Denmark is concerned nothing to see in Khmelnytskyi

We will have to wait to learn what the fallout from this blast contains. The one thing I am ruling out is that Russia used a tactical nuke. If time proves me wrong, then I will stand corrected.
But, whatever went up in these explosions, Ukraine is now short on ammo. Add in the similar strikes on Pavlohrad a few days ago, and I suspect Ukraine is seriously short on ammo. This unacknowledged shortage is large enough that we now have reports of multiple Ukrainian officials saying that the “counter offensive” will have to be delayed.
I’ll go out on a limb here and suggest that the counter offensive just got canceled. Ukraine has been done like a dinner, and Russia has played a masterful hand.
So what now? I suggest that whatever passes for a government in Kiev will have to forfeit all of Kherson (both sides of the river), all of Zaporizhzhia (both sides of the river), all of Donetsk and all of Luhansk. Perhaps an open city of sorts could be negotiated over Odessa, but I suspect Kharkov might be on its way to reincorporation into the Russian Federation.

Acute exposure to large doses of uranium occurs rarely and is not the focus of the paper, but is mentioned for the sake of completeness. Large dose acute exposure to uranium would probably be the result of an industrial or laboratory accident. Oxides, common salts of uranium, and uranium metal offer little risk unless ingested or inhaled in some manner. Other forms of uranium (e.g., uranium hexafluoride) are a direct chemical hazard due to their corrosive nature. Regardless of the form if large doses are ingested or inhaled acute renal failure due to tubular necrosis is the result. The LD50 of uranium for humans has been calculated to be about 14mg/kg, depending on the chemical form [34]. Depending on the dose the kidney may recover spontaneously or with dialysis. Rats exposed to uranyl acetate (1 mg/kg injected) demonstrated tubular necrosis and changes in blood chemistry reflecting renal compromise. After 30 days regeneration had taken place, however, cortical scarring and interstitial nephritis persisted [35]. Treatment of uranium intoxication involves removal of the sour buy ce of exposure and supportive treatment. Chelation strategies are of questionable value because these agents require that the uranium-chelation complex be secreted by the kidney, which is already compromised. However, the compound CBMIDA has shown promise by reducing uranium burden without causing renal damage and may be administered orally [36].
Whether or not DU causes cancer is a popular question in the public media and controversial in the scientific literature. While the radioactivity of DU is low, it is not absent. It has been pointed out [41] that if even a little as 1−2% of the 300 tons of DU used in the Gulf War were converted to respirable dust it would produce three to six million grams of DU dust. Using the figures provided by Durakovic this would release 1.16 million to 2.32 million Ci of radiation, a measure that would exceed the New York state safety levels for monthly release of 150Ci by a factor of 7,733 to 15,467. However, it is unlikely that this amount would be inhaled or ingested by a population, most of it would probably end up in the soil or diluted by the wind. Nonetheless, these figures suggest that it may not be prudent to completely ignore radiation risks from DU.
Human studies examining the carcinogenic potential of DU are limited but suggestive. Evidence of potential carcinogenic effects include suggestions of an increase in cervical carcinomas in Yugoslavia [42,43] and increases in micronuclei formation in subjects from the Bosnia/Herzegovina region [44]. There are also indications of hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase (HPRT) mutation in some Gulf War veterans [40] as well as chromosomal aberrations in a German study group [45]. Two studies have found suggestive chromosomal aberrations in workers exposed to DU [46,47].
Animal studies, while small in number, are also suggestive of some carcinogenic potential. DU has been shown to produce altered gene expression in vitro [48] as well as producing breakage of DNA strands [49] and carcinogenic mutation of human bronchial tissue in culture [50] and genomic instability of cultured human osteoblasts [51–54]. Genetic changes in mouse macrophages [55] and the production of soft tissue sarcomas in rats [56] has been seen with DU. DU also produces increased urinary mutagenicity of using the Ames test in rats [57]. DNA methylation was seen in a rat model of DU-induced leukemia [58]. A study out of France examined the effect of DU on mouse oocytes and found a reduction in the ‘quality’ of the female gamete [59]. Enriched uranium, but not DU had a significant impact on the testicular function of rats [60].
Studies on Gulf War veterans have found elevated DU levels in urine linked to embedded DU fragments [39]. DU urinary excretion has also been linked to high serum prolactin levels and neurocognitive performance [40]. To date we have not been able to find any long term studies addressing neuropsychological effects of DU exposure.
A further important potential hazard arises on the
battlefield when fragments of a DU penetrator that has
impacted or pierced a tank cause shrapnel wounds.
Small pieces of shrapnel embedded deep within tissues
can be difficult or hazardous to remove and a cohort of
US soldiers are being studied who have embedded DU
fragments resulting from ‘friendly fire’ incidents in the
Gulf War (annexe B). The radiation from these
embedded fragments, and the uranium released by
their slow dissolution, results in potential radiological
and chemical hazards.
Finally, there can be direct irradiation from DU
penetrators, either to soldiers who handle them, or the
crews of tanks loaded with DU munitions, but also to
civilians who return to the area and come in contact

on the battlefield.

Since the strike on Khmelnitsky, the wind has been blowing west. Earlier today the Marie Curie University in Lublin, Poland reported the same gamma spikes and also a significant rise in Bismuth concentrations in the air. This is important because Bismuth is the heaviest of the heavy metals that isn’t radioactive and is the breakdown product of radioactive isotopes like Uranium. This is pretty much a smoking gun that whatever blew up in either Khmelnitsky or Ternopol is spewing toxicity. Bismuth alone can cause birth defects and cancers just like other heavy metals such as lead, uranium etc.

I think everyone is getting their panties in a bunch over DU ammunition and radiation in general. People are paranoid about it. Every person on earth is exposed to radiation every day. There’s cosmic rays from the sky. There’s radon in your basement. The smoke detector on your ceiling or wall has an extremely hot pellet in order to work. Everyone that has an xray or nuclear medicine treatment is exposed to radiation. A certain amount of carbon that makes up your body decays.
America is so terrified that the nuclear industry which could power us for centuries is being shut down. And that’s funny considering that we contemplate nuclear war with a rival which really could bring extinction upon us. That threat is very real.
Projecting that DU ammunition is causing widespread contamination or that the Fukushima accident is contaminating the entire Pacific Ocean is bullshit.
And just for you to know, I once (unbeknownst to me)drank water from a spring on BLM lands in the mountains in Wyoming for about four months that was very radioactive. That was about 40 years ago.
I also had a stint working in a nuclear power plant and took on some very hot jobs where I was “cooked” . I have had body and facial contamination with hot particles.
I’m not saying that I might not get cancer from what I did. I have had friends that lived very pristine lives that came down with cancer and died.
This wringing our hands over DU ammunition appears to be blown completely out of proportion to the real threat which is a nuclear war .
The issue isn’t radiation. The issue is the micro/nano-particles that are created when a DU shell hits tank armour at supersonic velocities and the heat of impact ignites and/or dissociates the Uranium penetrator.
These float through the air until they fall to ground. When in the air, they can be inhaled and do tremendous damage to the lungs. After they hit the ground, they’re taken up by plants and enter the ground water to be ingested later by humans and animals. Again, tremendous health damage results.
Whether the explosions at Khmelnytskyi were sufficiently intense to destroy the DU is controversial, but in a case of literal blowback it happens the most recent winds are blowing westwards from the site, and Polish monitors are already clocking a dramatic spike in Bismuth in the air. As Bismuth is (apparently) released on destruction of DU, it seems that at least some of what was there now floats on the wind to be inhaled by western Ukrainians, Poles and Latvians.
