A couple of my Ex-Pat readers who are enjoying life in places like rural, southern France, have asked me to give them a flavor of what the United States is really like these days. It ain’t pretty.
Let us start with pervasive and growing addiction to illegal narcotics. Chew on this fact — almost twice as many Americans died from an overdose of fentanyl in one year (Feb 2021 to Feb 2022) than died in Vietnam during the 20 year war (1955 to 1975).
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than 108,000 people in the U.S. died of drug overdoses between February 2021 and February 2022. Of those, more than 70% involved fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.
Early indications are that more died during the last year (Feb 2022 to Feb 2023). Those are staggering numbers. The U.S. Government built a war memorial to the U.S. military personnel slain in that conflict. When you learn that more than a million Americans have died from fentanyl overdoses in the last twenty years then you begin to understand the gravity of this threat. That is more than twice as many that the U.S. lost in World War II. And what is the domestic reaction? A big yawn.
Remember the furor when Donald Trump describe some foreign countries as a “shit-hole?” Well, many of the largest American cities merit that title. Warning — I hope you are not eating while watching these; you may get sick. Here is San Francisco:

And what is the Government of the United States doing? Sending billions of dollars to Ukraine.
On the military front, all branches of the U.S. military are having trouble filling recruitment quotas. A friend of mine, whose son is a U.S. Marine, ran into his son’s recruiter the other night, a Master Gunnery Sergeant. The recruiter told him that he was having trouble snagging new recruits. My friend lives in the Tampa, Florida area. Ten years ago, military age kids flocked to join up. No longer. The woke military and the reckless political leadership pursuing endless overseas wars has exhausted the working class in America that previously encouraged their kids to join up.
The sad truth is that America is turning into a freak show. The media pushes the LGBTQ and transgender agenda with tenacity and many Americans have been numbed into passive acceptance of this weirdness. Anyone who dares to ridicule or joke about this is attacked, both physically and verbally. Just ask Dave Chapelle, a distinguished comic:

It’s interesting the topic of normalcy coming up. In 2017, I was in Moscow and a friend asked me to describe what it was like. What I saw and felt was an overwhelming sense of normalcy for the first time in a long while. No bizarre behavior, no filthy streets, just people working, tourists enjoying the sites, friends talking to each other on park benches, clean subways, inviting sidewalk cafes and coffee shops, and safe streets. Something like New York city was in the 1950’s. I felt as though I had stepped back in time. I think it was Andrei Martyanov who said that Russia was the repository of what is left of western Christian civilization and he nailed it.
Martyanov is Russian, and it seems to me that he is a bit chauvinist.
That what you saw in Moscow, is what you can experience in 90% of European cities.
And it has nothing to do with Russia being the repository of anything.
And if you have a look at the ranking made by an American company (Mercer), you will see where Moscow is regarding quality of life (jobs, corruption, security …)

That’s hilarious. Vancouver BC is ranked #3 in the world. Vancouver’s a paradise if you’re rich but for a working guy making $100k/yr with a family … forget about it … you’re looking at a 2 hour commute to find a rental you can afford let alone a home to buy. On top of that Vancouver has the same opiod / homeless problem San Francisco has. I can’t imagine what kind of hell it is for someone working in services / retail.

When I moved to Germany from Spain, I understood why those German cities are in the top 10, and Madrid and Barcelona so below.
And when I visited Moscow and SPB, I also understood why.

While I don’t profess to have visited every city in Europe, based on those I have ‘sampled’ over the last decade, I disagree with your remark. European cities are degenerating into just as big a shit hole as the US cities depicted in Larry’s post.
I say this having been to a couple of genuine shit holes (Luanda and Caracas spring to mind, although with the caveat that you can see that they must have been spectacular back in the day before someone squandered the inheritance) and I don’t claim that European cities are quite as broken. Yet.
It’s particularly hard hitting when one visits culturally significant cities like Paris or Rome and you come away wondering how ‘cultured’ is upposed to include the pervasive smell of stale urine and decomposing waste or the bums sleeping in the streets or river promeandes. Stephen Clarke alludes to this in the opening chapter of ‘A Year In The Merde’, where he describes the main impression of ‘the city of love’ being the presence of so much dog shit in the street.
Milan is supposed to be the centre of high fashion in Europe and it reminded me of the dystopian set of Robocop; muck and filth everywhere, the smell of decaying rubbish, grafitti on every building, holes in the roads, delapidated infrastructure and people wandering around aimlessly. Admittedly there wasn’t evidence on the streets of overt drug use when I visited.
A field trip to Spain three years ago left me with the same impression of Barcelona and the neighbouring sprawl. It was a relief to get into the Pyrenees and the small towns therein.
What was really eye opening though was a road trip in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands my family took about seven or eight years ago; Hamburg in particular, what a real shit hole. But the other large cities were only slightly less ‘shitholish’. Granted we went in summer and seemed to be followed from city to city by by the gay parade caravan and the decadant freak show that slithers out of the shadows to cavort publically and that might have contributed to the overall underwhelming impression, but the brawling yobbos on the grounds of the cathedral in Koln had nothing to do with gay parades (that probably had more in common with the gang rapes that came the following new years eve).
And why is it so many cities on the peninsula feel the need to list a sex museum as one of their main ‘must see’ attractions, is that really the best of Europe these days?
I can say none of the bigger cities I have visited on the Peninsula (by which I mean Europe; it’s pompous to think of it as a continent) compare favourably to Moscow or Peter. Just take a ride in the metro…
PS: I tend to agree with you one Peter being preferrable to Moscow, but I have to qualify that by admitting I’ve spent more time in Moscow and seen more of her warts than I’ve had the opportunity to in Peter.
Even a recent visit to Copenhagen left me wondering what happened to the place recently, although perhaps one should stay away from public transport and not visit during a miserable grey winter. And I wasn’t touring the sites, my trip took me to some of the perhaps less salubrious parts of the city than Tivoli or Christansborg. At least there aren’t so many dodgey looking characters lurking or laying about downtown Copenhagen as compared to other large cities on the peninsula, or for that matter over the border in Malmo.
To be fair to Europe, the decay, filth and despair does seem most evident in bigger cities; smaller regional towns and cities like Ghent, Wernigerode, Wilhelmshaven, Ainsa, Salzberg etc have left happy memories and do seem a repository of what is left of western Christian christian civilization, so I could agree with you with that caveat, although in southern Sweden even smaller regional centres are wearing that ‘eau de shit hole’ on their sleeve lately.
Let’s not even start on formerly Great Britain; it genuinely pains me to see what a sad, sorry state of affairs the islands are in. It is like a rubbish dump, a drug rehabilitation centre and a lunatic asylum had a drunken three way daliance and their unruly spawn moved into a fine old stately home owned by geriatrics whose kids had moved away somewhere with a future. I would suggest our modern expectation in the west that we’ll get our money for nothing and our recently developed sense of entitlement having far outgrown our sense of responsibility or community have something to do with the malaise. Notice in the first video Larry posted the first thing everyone says is more or less “the gumment ought to do something”, why? That would be the same ‘gumment’ the people have apparently voted for, presumably because they promised more ‘free stuff’, not because they promised tough love. Since time immemorial we all understood that gumment ineptocracies recruit mostly passion fingers (people for whom anything they touch gets fu**ed), so why have we in the west decided to depend on gumment to fix or properly manage anything?
One other point on the illegal drug use in the US specifically and the developed world generally; is it not also the case that a large percentage of the population is now ‘addicted’ (or is that prescribed) to legal drugs? I don’t think I know anyone who isn’t taking pills daily for something, mostly it seems to be for diabetes, cholesterol, depression or allergies of one sort or other; I don’t recall this being so pervasive in my youth. So are we evolving into weaker specimens, are our diets that much worse now than even 30 year ago, are we bigger hypochondriacs now, do we live so much longer now that ‘old age’ ailments manifest more readily, are there more toxins in our daily lives now, are we more easily convinced that we ‘need’ this, that or whatever? Maybe it is just easier to reach for a pill than to identify the root cause and get over it?
I am French and live in France. I can tell you that even medium-sized cities have rotten neighbourhoods, plagued by trafficking and scoundrels. As for the big cities that we call regional capitals, insecurity is growing. Let’s throw a veil of secrecy over Paris. The city is repulsively dirty, the metro is a horror and the Parisians are vile people. We have become Americanised. Only in the provincial holes has life retained a little of the French art de vivre.
I left the USA and moved to Poland over 30 years ago, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Warsaw is a safe, clean, and above all normal city. The USA in contrast is self-destructing.

By all measures United States is a 3rd world country with a subdued and brainwashed/propangadized population too busy surviving paycheck to paycheck to even care about being financially raped by the corporate/government complex. Embarrassed at my amusement to the first element you cite, fentanyl. I work at a company that I am sure is making significant profit running screening tests, as do I. But I also worked at a wireless communications company climbing towers. Those guys (quite a few vets) were disappearing like a steak sandwich at a dog show.

I am an expat in Vienna. While I certainly abhor the fentanyl/opioid negligent homicides, Alcohol kills far more people and shows no sign of abating. Alcohol destroys far more families and is available everywhere, especially in Europe and some US states. Worse, alcohol is promoted everywhere from sitcoms, to movies, state functions, holidays, etc. The most common discounted item at stores here in Vienna is alcohol – especially for the big holidays.
And, btw, while I abhor the border policy/situation, the VAST majority of fentanyl/opioid is coming through the ports and underground tunnels, not on the backs of illegal immigrants – that trade has been taken over by the drug cartels, so you can blame drugs for that.
The solution is not a new war on drugs – 90 years of that failed policy is enough. The problem is that there are so many homeless, but more importantly, so many disillusioned, hopeless, “horrible” jobs (I go to far with that word, but that is the feeling). The complete disillusionment in the government by the American People is the problem

Agree, the war on drugs policy, is a failure. The question is, why does it continue?

How people die from alcohol and from fentanyl are totally different. Deaths due to over consumption of alcohol are long term. Fentanyl overdose kills immediately. It is literally impossible to die of a one night drinking fest given the regulations on legal content alcohol.
When a clerk sells you three bottles of wine, he knows you will not die. If a drug dealer sells you fentanyl, he knows you may die that night.
Your comparison is specious and wrong and minimizes the deaths, and with it policy implications.
I may be wrong but I was under the impression alcohol poisoning was possible and happens often enough to be a consideration.
It’s definitely possible to self induce blood alcohol contents high enough to kill you in one night on over the counter alcohol products. And where I live you can push a cart of hard liquor out the store without any questions or concern unless you had a visible propensity to alcohol abuse.
Please correct me if I’m wrong on being able to self induce a lethal BAC but I really am under the impression this is so.

As an aside fentynal is awful and kills as many people as booze does if not more where I’m at. Terrible stuff. Tell people that use to keep naloxone or whatever handy. It saves a lot of lives.

And yes, the electricity goes out more than it did in the 1970s and 80s when it only went out for storms instead of unusually hot or cold days. This year the electricity went out for a few hours when it 108 and when it was 6.
Objectively, things are worse than they used to be, but not yet so bad that people can’t ignore it if they want to ignore it. In the red states for people willing to work, poverty is pretty much an impossibility and middle class lifestyle is assured. For people who are both smart and willing to work, upper middle class lifestyles aren’t too hard to find.

Can attest re: SF. The city has become an abomination, and a dangerous one at that. I live within 30 minutes’ drive of the city and have to pass through it regularly. Eyes are on 360 when I’m on foot (rarely, thankfully). Many of the neighborhoods have long stretches that reek like an outhouse on a hot day. Watch your step, too: feces and drug paraphernalia lie underfoot. And now flakka (gravel) is circulating in the city; its effects make ‘roid rage look like a meditation retreat. There’s no sign whatsoever of a middle class, which I regard as a warning sign of imminent civil disintegration in any major US city. If it’s just the contemptuous rich and the desperate poor, there is no longer any society, any glue, and any unity.

Greetings from Moscow. I’m an American ex-pat who moved here 1 year ago to escape
southern France where I lived previously for 8 years. The Covid crisis emboldened the French government to tyrannize the population such that I chose to leave. I feel free, independent and safe in Moscow, at last.
I knew only 3 Russians before moving here and I do not speak Russian. My new Russian friends speak English as many Russians do. Muscovites embrace me knowing I’m American. Living here I know the Muscovites as open, direct, humane, kind, generous and compassionate people. Hatred is not in their character.
I have access to all international media, every type of food is available in stores (including exotic ingredients), the transportation system is excellent, the city is clean and the citizens are respectful and courteous.
It appears that the propagandized West is beyond redemption. It’s heartbreaking.

I live in beautiful Zagreb, Croatia with my 16 year old son. Is it perfect? Of course not! There are amenities and conveniences I miss, but I don’t have to worry that my son will be attacked for his race, sex or political views. The Balkans are safe in the way I imagine rural America was into the 60s. We can walk anywhere, and the biggest concern is bicycles on uneven sidewalks. I will gladly take that over worrying that my beloved son may be shot by Darquel or Ramón because. We speak the lingo very well (my ex-wife is native – and still lives in LA) and are part of the community which is always so interested in the crazy Americans who left LA for sleepy Zagreb! 😆

I am an ex-pat married to the most wonderful Chinese lady and living in Chengdu, China. I left the US for good in 2000 after being tired of living in neighborhoods without knowing or interacting with your neighbors.
I retired in March 2015 and have traveled through all but six of China’s provinces and municipalities. China today is safe, peaceful, and has the dynamism that the US had when I was a kid in the 1950s and early 1960s.
It makes one sad to read of the degradation of the US, but the country has brought it on itself. Former classmates there get their news from the MSM and are content to fiddle with their hobbies and ignore what is happening to the country. It seems that a complete collapse there will be needed to get the American people to pull together as a united nation, but then reviewing the sorry state of US education even a complete collapse may not bring the people together to rebuild what was once a truly great nation.

RE military recruitments, not surprising. Why? Simple: many young people are very internet savvy, and to think we are about to go WW3, the smart ones just stay away, not worth the “risk” of actually being deployed. Most people are naive, thinking altruistically, when in reality, a good % of new recruits just want the benefits that come w/ the military to get ahead AS LONG AS NO WARS ARE WITHIN THE FUTURE that can get them killed or mortally wounded for life. Back in the 90’s, I knew a few who joined to get the GI Bill, free this/that, etc. The minute they are able to leave, the immediately quit to move on w/ their lives since they got what they wanted. These LGBT BS and Woke nonsense, that crowd in particular, just wants a FREE RIDE on the military to pay for their obscene demands for trans surgeries. Since Obama got elected, the path toward Marxism has accelerated. Marxists are basically lazy, unmotivated, greedy lot who wants something for nothing. Latin America is repeating the same experiment, one by one, the nations there reverting back to this non productive choice. Sorry America, Asia is the continent for this century, just look at their young, so hard working, hungry and productive. My wife and I have lived outside a world-heritage town in central Mexico for the past 5 years, and life is good.
As you see in the news, one or two weeks per year, the truce between government and a major cartel is shaken, but then detente returns and life goes back to normal. Cartels continually make war with one another, but for uninvolved parties in most states, it’s largely background noise. Just color between the lines.
SARS-CoV-2 was a big deal over here, but mandatory inoculation is contrary to the Constitution of Mexico. Inflation is a constant weight, but because energy costs are constrained by government, families cope. Life goes on because 90% of Mexico still follows the constant breeze of family, faith, and tradition rather than the shifting gusts of government.
If we had no Internet connection nor family and friends in the USA—and stayed away from “progressive” gring@s in town—we’d have no idea that America is sliding into terminal disrepair.

Reference military recruitment. Here is a story for you. I was shot while in the US Army. It was a “good” wound and not much of a problem. I never gave it any thought. Years later a fellow Veteran asked me what my disability rating was. I said “huh”? He said Dude, you get money for that. There was a local Veteran of Foreign Wars where they had a guy who did your paperwork. I wandered over. It was first come, first served. I went in, we talked for a bit. He said where are your medical records? I said “huh”? Here is my DD 214. He gets up, looks outside, and closes the door to the office. I ask, “Am I in trouble”? He says no. I don’t want the people outside to hear this. He says you are your generation. You went in, did your job, and never thought of getting anything. Those kids out there? They do 4 years. They document every injury. Every illness. When you leave, look at the kid in front. He has two banker boxes of records. They go in planning on a 100% disability. Here is what we do. To get you in the system, we do a hearing loss. That is an easy case. Then we start on the gunshot. 20% disability on the hearing within 7 months. The gunshot took 2 years and gave me another 30%. The 50% gives me free medical and medicines. The monthly check is over $1000. Our world. ‘Murica.

They don’t have to do four years. Some get kicked out of basic training and learn they can get lifetime VA disability pay for their trauma or mental illness, and many get it! An Air Force captain told me that if an airmen gets a DUI or positive test for drugs, they rush down to mental health to complain about all their traumas in service, getting it all documented. Then it takes a year to kick them out because they are dealing with PTSD or whatever, then they leave with lifetime disability pay.

It would be “ironic” to say the least, rather than splitting up Russia into multiple vassal states, US/EU ends up splitting amongst themselves. US and Canada splits into 3-4 sections whereby Alberta joins the US while Vancouver BC gang joins up w/ Wash to Calif plus N. Mexico/Arizona/maybe Nevada. I live in a suburb of St. Louis, mo. It has been described by a writer I know as a shithole, which has some validity, but it has some good parts, and the subs aren’t terrible. I like Missouri, as it seems to avoid a lot of the crud you see elsewhere. Things are fairly stable, gas is lower than most of the country, the attorney general is putting the pressure keeping drag queens out of libraries, and during covid, the state mostly stayed out of the rules, except here in St. Louis, where the County Manager ran it like a covid kingdom. A democrat, as you can guess, and the liberals and mass of black voters keep him and them in power.
When you drive thirty miles out, you feel like you’re in a different country. Here in St. Louis, I see T-shirts saying vote for Biden, one saying “Lock Him (Trump) Up,” and GOP=Sedition. Of the four wearers, three were older people, two bundled in masks. 65 miles south there are still Trump signs on lawns, and at a picnic a girl wore a T-shirt : “F**k Biden. Trump is my president.”
I think all the problems discussed above are only resolvable by secession. Let the red areas go, and they will function, and with a dead federal government, can restore a civilization. The blue/urban areas are too far gone.

On a personal level, I work at AT&T. It is okay, but there are functional problems because the company laid off hundreds of workers and brought in people from India (cheep labor!), threatening AT&T workers that if they wouldn’t train them, they would get no buy-out. The company neglected its equipment and sites for years while the executives concentrated on Warner Communications and Media expansion, and they gave up the country for L.A. As a result, there are few maintenance men or field workers. Most of them are in their sixties. They need younger men, but aren’t getting them, and the company gutted its maintenance and ground level workers to rely on contractors, who don’t know as much. A contractor on our site is a good man, but he doesn’t understand basic refrigeration or wiring, and without that knowledge you can’t maintain a modern building. But contractors are cheep!
The GM of AT&T happily made personnel cuts and bennies, but voted himself a three million dollar raise.
There is a real problem that basic services won’t have maintenance, and this is everywhere. Civilizations exist by maintenance as much as great works and lots of gold and a big military. The city has done a lot of restoration, but the buildings are empty, because no one wants to live in the city. We need cities, but to restore them will require a ruthless cleaning up.
Again, get rid of Washington and these corporate heads, and only then can you begin reforms. America’s day may be over, but it can still be a good, happy place and a respectable regional power.

I think, as some have said, it might be best for Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovenia reform a semi-Hapsburg empire, just for defense and economic safety. Not that the Austrians lord it over the slavs, but it could be a better deal than the EU dictatorship. It seems a lot of problems, especially Ukraine, began when the Austro-Hungarian empire was broken up.

Rural America is caught up in the problems, too. Here, in a small rural city of about 20,000, in a rural county in a Midwest state, we have two homeless camps, one on each side of the town. Now these activities have morphed into a NGO that is active in several small communities across the US. We don’t deal with issues like homelessness or drug abuse, and instead look at the big picture and see what can or should be done. We use a combination of human and open source intelligence collection and apply it to solving issues in small communities.

I spent two months at Rockville Ma in 2006. Looking from the Lincoln Memorial I saw what seemed like lovely lawns. Walking up from there, way past the Viet Nam memorial, the lawns seen up close were full of weeds interspersed with grass and bald patches. It struck me, that the iconic parks in the capitol of the free world, of supposedly the richest country in the history of the planet, wouldn’t hire enough gardeners to take care of the place properly. Big-noting themselves abroad but neglecting their own front yard.
In 2001 I spent some time in Minneapolis. Lovely countryside and friendly people. Twice a day I drove on the bridge over the Mississippi. Couple of years later I saw on the news it collapsed. That doesn’t happen if you maintain them properly. “I got lucky” isn’t how one should feel driving over bridges.
The decline of the US is such a shame. I enjoyed my trips in the Land of the Gun-totin Crazies that had thrilled me as a boy watching them put a man on the moon.

Before Lincoln and the war, America’s greatest philosopher and statesman, John C. Calhoun, predicted the rapid and unstoppable social, economic and political meltdown Americans are experiencing now. Calhoun prophesied that a future historian, when performing the postmortem on the U.S. after its downfall, would identify as its cause of death the delusional belief of many Americans that “all men are created equal”, and that all people are equally entitled to and fit for extensive liberty.
Noting how the mentally shallow and politically ambitious would embrace Jefferson’s mindless and un-Biblical phrase, Calhoun rightly called it the most dangerous “of all political errors.” He foresaw how demagogues like Lincoln would craft this obviously false notion into malicious and seductive sophistry, like the Gettysburg Address. Now, after decades of relentless egalitarian social engineering, the United States is hopelessly divided, institutionally weak, and ready to fall. Before Lincoln and the war, America’s greatest philosopher and statesman, John C. Calhoun, predicted the rapid and unstoppable social, economic and political meltdown Americans are experiencing now. Calhoun prophesied that a future historian, when performing the postmortem on the U.S. after its downfall, would identify as its cause of death the delusional belief of many Americans that “all men are created equal”, and that all people are equally entitled to and fit for extensive liberty.
Noting how the mentally shallow and politically ambitious would embrace Jefferson’s mindless and un-Biblical phrase, Calhoun rightly called it the most dangerous “of all political errors.” He foresaw how demagogues like Lincoln would craft this obviously false notion into malicious and seductive sophistry, like the Gettysburg Address. Calhoun had warned: Efforts to instantiate equality, contrary to nature and God’s laws, do more to destroy family and good government than all other causes combined. With stunning prescience, Calhoun foretold the great egalitarian crusades since 1861 — from abolition to black and women’s suffrage to desegregation to gay and trans “rights” to anti-white CRT — and how they would destroy all truly constitutional and republican government.
