“I Can’t Breathe” — Criminal Negligence by Knoxville Tennessee Police Kills an Elderly Woman

1 March 2023 by Larry Johnson 50 Comments

Lisa Edwards

The following is so shocking and horrific I am compelled to do my part to spread the word. The attached video shows Knoxville Tennessee police mistreating an obese, elderly woman. What was done to her is inhuman and cannot be attributed to the actions of just one misguided cop. This is a cultural problem in the Knoxville Police Department. Not a single officer intervened to help her — and there were at least five involved. This was not racial. There were black and white officers involved and not one shred of compassion among them. Heartless bastards! Some even laughed at the poor woman.

I think this is far worse than the death of George Floyd. Floyd died from a fentanyl overdose and the police handled him according to their training. I am not saying I endorse that training but I firmly believe you cannot teach police to use certain techniques, e.g. knee on neck restraint, and then turn around and prosecute cops for doing what they were taught. Change the damn training.

I am posting two videos. They provide terribly disturbing images of complete disregard for life of Lisa Edwards.

The hospital, the doctor who released her and the police are liable in my view and I hope a tenacious attorney steps up to get her family some justice.

Very disturbing indeed. Big lawsuit going the hospital’s way. Hard to blame the police for being heartless morons though. It’s a natural condition these days, like her stroke.

Not meant to besmirch all police, just the morons.

Thank you for bringing this to light. Our peace officers have been trained to behave as occupation troops in a hostile land. Yes – it’s systemic.

Cops despise the Citzenry. They‘ve been trained that way for at least 20 years.

The hospital and the police made grievous errors. Someone in dire need was an inconvenience. That was plain to see. But donuts and coffee on the “Lord’s day” was more important. Well, the lord was questioned by a man in Luke 10:
And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?” And he answered, “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE.” But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Jesus transitioned into the parable of the good Samaritan, who was a real neighbor.

I seem to recall that officially the proximate cause of Floyd’s death was the knee to the neck, not fentanyl OD. It was ruled a homicide.

A whole host of properly executed and perfectly legal “non-lethal” physical restraints can cause death if the adept applies the technique too long.

They could have driven Floyd straight to the cells, and wiped their hands of his corpse.

      They did not.

When he complained of feeling ill, they let him out of the car, at his request, and called for medical help.

While they were waiting, they restrained him, to prevent him harming himself further.

Floyd was a big man, and the officer was much smaller. The knee was on the shoulder area, not the neck, as the police camera confirmed. Videos shot from a different angle were misleading, and widely disseminated for that reason.

If you support imprisoning conscientious officers for doing their best to help a prisoner, you have only yourself to blame when the others harden their hearts.

Can we add one more element that is lacking, Mercy.

When we start looking at a problem we find what are the common denominators of Cause and the common denominator of effects.

Here is a major common denominator of causes:

        https://progressive.org/latest/us-police-trained-by-israel-communities-of-color-paying-price-shahshahani-cohen-191007/

        https://www.telesurenglish.net/news/Human-Rights-Abuser-Israel-Trains-US-Police-Report-20200531-0005.html

        https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/israel-us-police-training-end-knee-neck-protests

and here is a big WTF:

        https://www.timesofisrael.com/adl-considered-scrapping-its-us-police-training-trips-to-israel-but-decided-not-to/

Now what are the common denominator of effects?

        – Knee on the neck or I can’t breath.
        https://www.timesofisrael.com/idf-soldier-filmed-kneeling-on-palestinian-protesters-neck-during-arrest/

        – I feared for my life.

        – Threatening the elderly

If you wish to ask a pertinent question here is one: Why would you expect any different treatment from our police when their high ranking officers have been trained by an occupation army.

Good take. They’ve sent their heavy duty Israeli trainers here for gargantuan fees to train West Bank tactics to 75 percent of civilian lawmen in this country. What’s ‘needed’ in the west Bank and Gaza isn’t needed here. But pressure and cash cows have kept the scam going for decades. People have no idea the depths of Israeli lobby tendrils in our society. In 26 states, to raise a word of objection is a violation of the anti boycott and diversify code agreements state employees sign and will get you fired.

So does the chicken shit. That still doesn’t motivate the people from starting at the top and killing their way down.

No. Because they are chicken shits. Cowards. Killing the poor soul(s) right in front of them.

This insanity has taken over every institution in the United States. You would think these cops were doctors, nurses, and health care workers, the way they have been racking up body counts. It’s mainly the insane cops fault of course. They should all be fired and charged. But the main thing here is the American health care system, with privatized for profit hospitals. Around 40 000 Americans die each year because they can’t afford health care. And those numbers are from before Covid. More than 40 million Americans are uninsured (again numbers from before Covid). A further 250 000 die each year from mistakes, oversight etc because the system is so fragment.

The US has basically the worst health care outcomes among the developed countries. At the same health care spending is twice )on average and per capita), that of comparable countries. The US is also the only first world country that has got free health care. Every other developed country has a system similar to the Medicare for all system Bernie is suggesting. If the US had a system like that, the first hospital would have taken the lady in and given her the treatment she needed.

Government funded health/no user fee health care is not socialism. It’s a requirement in a fair and most of all efficient capitalist system.

You need to look outside the four walls of uSA.
Great Britain has health care, touted as the ‘envy of the world’.
This woman would probably be told we are busy, put on a trolly in a corridor (std procedure), and left for until they could get round to her.
Sometimes hours and sometimes longer. The ‘heath care’ is free, but not necessarily immediate.
Oh and Britain pays through the nose for this level of care through taxes. Most of the rest of erope demands ‘how are you going to pay for treatment’ when entering a hospital (- personal experience unfortuneately).

There’s a lot of that going around. You will never be cooperative enough for people like this; you will never be compliant enough. It’s everywhere. In every facet and every (formerly) dark corner of American society. It’s out in the open. We are insane. That’s why they call these killings “senseless.”

Some will say this only ends when the prey start preying upon themselves. Don’t count on it.

Still, the fact remains. No society, no culture, no civilization can long survive when the mass murderers are running the show. This is why government reserves the right of violence to themselves. If the people did it — and not when; the people are doing it — the killing gets out of hand almost immediately.

Cops get desensitized because they deal with liars and scammers all the time, but they should always err on the safe side in any medical situation. Better to indulge 5 scammers than to let 1 innocent person die because you didn’t believe them.

A lot going through my mind here but I don’t want to run on. I’ve lived in various social strata, had numerous contact with police, drank with a few, and even was recruited to join the force at the ripe old age of 38. I’ve seen calm behavior as well, an officer of the year convicted for stealing $15k, even as 16 responding in a brawl with each other while I lay getting tased! Adrenaline is a rush … They did me a favor once, wrote up an incident GOA (gone on arrival) after an altercation I had with four Rollin’ 60’s Crips on a moonlit Saturday night up and down Payne Ave. Ag. Assault with a deadly weapon charges would have made Willie a dull boy, even though I don’t usually bring a baton to a gunfight. For a month or two after cops would walk up on me and shake my hand … but like certain gangs, when birds flock together, well, they can be real assholes. Now I have run my mouth.
    Personal anecdote; bored yet?
Was driving cab last year, cash green, to supplement a pension and SSI. This, in an upper crust suburb from the TC. Not once but twice I picked up dischargees from the local M&A hospital conglomerate that shouldn’t have been cut loose. the last was a lady in full throes of dementia, living alone in one of the remaining cheap duplexes in this little border town on a river gone full on white flight-ville. After attempting to attend to her needs, alarming a neighbor, then explaining the reason, who did I call?
That’s not the point. Personally, I’d drive 20 miles back to St. Paul to avoid attending an emergency than mess with that crew of incompetents. So would most of the rest of the denizens of “Happyville”. Word gets around.
Excuses don’t cut it. Hit ’em where it hurts; right in the pocketbook. They’ll settle out of court as I suspect so will these featured antagonists, above.

This is commentary on our culture and the depths that society has plummeted.
The fact that this surfaced means IMO this kind of behavior is becoming very common.
Now the reason for an immoral society where the many in authority have lost their moral conscience.
Starts in the early sixties when the Supreme Court justices didn’t have the backbone to stand up for God and country.
Took God out the school by removing prayer and later the pledge of Allegiance.
From that point on we been digging a hole maybe I should just go ahead and call it like it is, our grave.
So then today we have neocon demonic creeps representing TPTB intent on finishing the grave site.
When did our current leaders lose their human morality.
I suppose when God was told to get lost; we are exceptional and we don’t need your divine assistance.
But then everyone knows this but it’s so much easier to look the other way and pretend we don’t know rather than to come to some reckoning.

I’m not outraged at the cops. They are just part of the machine. They could have done better. But what exactly is their job ? In this case their job was to serve the interest of a larger corporate entity that probably has some measurable power in Knoxville.

What strikes me, is that the hospital discharged her and then when she could not or would not leave called the cops to remove her for trespass. The Hospital seems to have privileges not afforded to most average citizens.

We live in a inhuman, mechanical system governed by non-human entities. The Hospital is likely a large corporation whose major shareholders are other corporations whose shareholders are other corporations. The pathway to actual human ownership is so dilute as to be non existent.

When there is no owner, there is no responsibility. The hospital is in the hands of managers. Managers are not owners. They full fill a role. That is the extent of their participation. For all practical purposes the hospital is a non-human, artificial intelligence. When people warn about the dangers of artificial intelligence, they don’t realize that AI’s are already in charge – its just that they are not silicon based like everyone expects.

The Police are the same. They are simple extensions of the political machinery which has become an appendage of the corporate machinery. We can reasonably blame them for a lack of humanity, but isn’t that how they are expected to behave: as non-humans. They are simply agents of a set of rules and procedures at the behest of the entire non-human, artificial apparatus. If they acted like autonomous humans we would accuse them of taking the law into their own hands.

The video does not show us anything of the cops interactions with the hospital administration or with their own chain of command. They are confronted with an incoherent woman who seems to them like just another of the endless number of tweakers and self-incompetents that populate their everyday work lives. Then they go home and step out of the role of artificial appendage and become human beings for 16 hours until their next shift.

A reasonable act for the responding officer might have been to contact the Hospital and say, “the woman says shes sick. She seems sick to me. You are a hospital, take care of her”. The Administration would then have called his supervisor or watch commander, who in turn would have said, scoop her up and transport her. The cop could have refused. If he had a strong union maybe he would have kept his job.

Really, what do you expect from a society that denies God and firmly accepts that man is the measure of all things ? Like Nietzsche said, “you cannot reject Christ and keep Christian values”. The values on display in the video are pagan values. If Knoxville were the streets of ancient, pre-Christian Rome, we would simply marvel at how restrained these Legionaries behaved. Everything they did would fit in perfectly with the pagan culture of the time.

I think you have come closest to the truth. We have lost our souls-traded them for our positions in an anti-human, corporate system that worships only money and power. We attempt to save ourselves by adopting a group identity (doesn’t matter which one) and then “othering” everyone else. Then we wonder why people seem so viscious. A few revel in the loss of personal responsibility, not realizing they have given up agency too. But most just feel helpless in the face of the machine, give in and go deaf, dumb, blind and numb to calm their fear. Once you do that, you rarely come back. You can do, or fail to do, just about anything to the “other”, and never lose a moment’s sleep. The greatest battle we face is to understand what it means to have and keep our souls, choose good values greater than ourselves, and stay humble servants to them. That humility is what keeps us able to question our actions and correct course. That may not seem heroic, but my heroes are those people who fight that inner battle every day. In the very act of saving their own souls, they also show the way to others.

Agree it is counter-productive to vilify police as individuals, when the problem is systemic. In order to stomach their job, and face the shit show they are confronted with on a daily basis, police officers in the US eventually lose their capacity for compassion. A similar phenomenon happens to soldiers in a war. Very few are genuine sociopaths to begin, the process of dehumanizing their “subjects” is cultivated by their working conditions, and improper training. But training is only one part of the problem…a deeply sick society is the underlying disease.

About Larry C. Johnson

I am a bona fide Son of American Revolutionaries. At least 24 of my ancestors, men and women, fought to free the American Colonies from British rule. Some died for the cause of liberty. Though two and a half centuries have passed since my great grandfathers and grandmothers took up arms, the principles they fought for remain valid and relevant to the 21st Century. This blog is dedicated to the pursuit of truth without regard to partisan advantage. I welcome like minded patriots.
