If you thought the horrendous Ukrainian casualties and Ukraine’s failure to penetrate the first line of the Surovikin defense after more than three months of combat would finally penetrate the thick skulls of “O’Bidens” national security team and a slew of military pundits and awaken them to the impending Ukrainian debacle, think again. These folks are doubling down on a losing hand. They ain’t pretending. They really believe the crap they are spinning.

Someone needs to teach Tony how to read a map of Ukraine and how to count. The West continues to harp on Russia’s withdrawal from Kharkiv a year ago as a major defeat for Russia. Giving up hundreds of square kilometers of farmland is not militarily significant. Russia, by contrast, continued to advance westward — remember Bakhmut and the long list of cities and villages Russia captured prior to that battle? Russia’s capture and control of Melitopol and Mariupol remains unchallenged. Just because Ukraine is doing the equivalent of accelerating a car into a concrete embankment does not mean the ensuing car wreck is a success. The slaughter of Ukrainian forces continues, Ukrainian cemeteries are bursting at the seams and Russia is turning the Western supplied tanks and armored vehicles into smoldering junk piles on a daily basis.
The new security funding that we’re announcing today will also be bolstered by the arrival of U.S. Abrams tanks this fall and by training for Ukrainian pilots on F-16s in the United States, complementing training that is already underway in Europe.
Even as we maximize our support for Ukraine to counter the current Russian aggression, we’re committed to helping Ukraine build a force for the future that can deter and defend against future aggression. This is why the French expected a replay of the 1914 Schlieffen Plan in 1940 and planned to counter it with the Dyle Plan. The Germans however, discovered that they could “overcome the topography” and move through the lightly defended Ardennes instead.
As to your observation about the military significance of the Izyum Bridgehead, you may find this interesting and very familiar, if you are studying the live-ua-map, as all you need to do is change the dates:

So, as you stated, before Kharkov or Kramatorsk / Slavyansk fall, Krasni-Liman and Izyum will likely need to fall first, unless the RF can find another solution.
As to Larry’s point, the region was lightly defended during the first year of the SMO, with the majority of RF troops fighting in the Kherson / land bridge vicinity. As the RF had not sufficient troops to take either the Kramatorsk -Slavyansk conurbation or Kharkov, it is likely that they just hoped to hold it as springboard for future operations. It is very likely the AFU were aware of this danger, as it is well known military history and so they were willing to pay a huge cost in men and material to retake it. However, losing the Izyum Bridgehead was hardly a significant disaster in the way that say losing Tokmak or Melitopol would have been, it was just disheartening for the RF, as they knew they would need to “pay for the same real estate twice.” All IMHO.

A few contrarian articles do slip through from time to time, with The National Interest being the best for that of all three. IMHO But, currently there seems to be little introspection or self criticism. I’ve live in a small town in Russia. I lost absolutely all confidence in Blinken last year. I am a single father and had come in from the grocery store. I was feeling great. I have noticed recently though that your interviews on the subject of Ukraine are straying into hyperbole. Perhaps, you believe this will change peoples minds – maybe and a noble cause…….but I, myself just value your sober/rational analysis, observations and wisdom.
Bit of history first:
Missiles fell on the capital city of Iraq. The invaders were speedy and destructive, compelling surrender, occupying much of the country. It sounds like today’s headlines, but it comes instead from ancient Rome’s 600-year struggle for world domination, one of the earliest tests of West versus East.
The US NeoCons desire world domination and have been expending ANY and ALL resources possible to subdue anyone who does not comply. It has been doing this for years. Those who dare to say NO, also have to expend social/economic resources to resist – there is no free lunch in resisting!
While Russian is likely in a better position with regard to resources, it is not limitless and cannot go on forever. The US is burdened by a black hole of debt, but still controls many vassals who are forced to do their bidding and each new military/financial expenditure on this effort by the US and vassals has a diminishing impact over the last expenditure. There is no magical wonder-weapon.
I am reasonably certain that an cold economic analysis of the efficacy or value/gain of each new expenditure in Ukraine will show diminishing real gains. Perhaps this will be true for both sides, as a poisoned Ukraine full of destitution, unexploded munitions and depleted uranium……and God forbid plutonium,caesium and a whole cast of other radioisotopes, will have what value?
