I am hesitant to give any publicity to someone who traffics in lies, but this recent piece by Owen Matthews in The Spectator is so egregious and so out of touch with reality that I am compelled to set the record straight.
Owen Matthews masquerades as a Brit (he is a legit citizen of the U.K.) but his mother hails from Kharkiv, Ukraine. Got the picture? I think I am on solid ground to suggest he is a bit fanatical in his support of Ukraine. He speaks Russian and served as the Moscow Bureau Chief for Newsweek form 2006 to 2012. So he is not without experience. How can a man with this pedigree be so dishonest when it comes to writing about the current situation in Russia? He is not lacking in intelligence (by that I mean book smarts), which makes it highly unlikely that he is stupid when it comes to reporting on current events. His latest article, Where’s Putin? The Russian leader is losing control, is a stunner. Here are the introductory paragraphs:
Does Putin even still exist? Where is he anyway?’ asked Igor Strelkov, former minister of defence of the self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic last month in one of the regular video rants he publishes on his Telegram channel. It’s a good question. Since 3 May, the Kremlin has been struck by two Ukrainian drones while up to 30 more have fallen among the billionaire dachas of Russia’s elite along the exclusive Rublevo-Uspenskoe highway. Anti-Putin Russians attacking from Ukraine have seized at least eight villages in Belgorod province, capturing Russian soldiers and sending drones to hit the regional capitals of Belgorod, Voronezh and Kursk. Russia’s Wagner mercenary group captured and beat up a Russian regular army battalion commander and forced him to make a hostage-style video admitting to drunkenly ordering his men to shell Wagner positions. Meanwhile, Wagner’s founder and chief, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has been touring Russia drumming up recruits and giving a series of highly inflammatory interviews in which, among other things, he has called for defence minister Sergei Shoigu to be tried and shot for facilitating ‘the genocide of the Russian population’.
And Putin? As Strelkov put it, Russia’s ‘commander-in-chief has withdrawn from hostilities’. Over recent weeks Putin has appeared to tell an audience of children that he sleeps ‘very well at night’; to briefly claim that the Ukrainian counter-offensive has ‘failed to achieve any of its goals’ despite then admitting Russia had lost 54 tanks last week; and to have breakfast with his ally Alexander Lukashenko and agree that Russian tactical nuclear missiles would be deployed in neighbouring Belarus. In all these appearances Putin looked stiff, puffy and stilted. ‘You can make reports to a mummy, but it does not mean that the reports are heard,’ continued Strelkov in an open attack on Putin. ‘Either we must hand over power to someone more competent, or take it upon ourselves to carry this burden. If a horse has drowned crossing a river, you can’t conceal it for ever. The wagon is sinking.’
To be charitable it is possible that Matthews pecked out this piece two months ago when Prigozhin was doing his almost daily, crazed rants and that his editors held it for some unknown reason. If that is the case then his editors should be fired for allowing this nonsense to run.
Where is Putin? He has been a busy boy.
Let’s start with June 13, 2023. Putin held forth for almost three hours with war correspondents representing a variety of news outlets and blogs. Imagine “Dementia” Joe Biden doing that? Biden would be hard pressed to do 30 minutes and most of his babble would be incoherent (e.g., God Save the Queen). If you have not watched this press conference it is worth your time.
Putin followed up this sit down by hosting the President of Algerian on June 15 at the Kremlin. How did a guy missing in action, as claimed by Owen Matthews, managing to do that?
The following day, June 16, Putin delivered the keynote address to the participants in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). It lasted several hours and he shared the stage with the President of Algeria.
On June 17 Putin spoke again at the plenary session of SPIEF, which also featured speeches by Xi Jinping, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
And let’s not forget that President Putin also had an extended sit down with the delegation from Africa (which I wrote about yesterday).
Owen Matthews is delusional. He closes his article with this nonsense:
A regime that is capable of such a massively self-defeating act of stupidity and mass destruction is capable of anything. Putin was dangerous enough when he was strong, confident and aggressive. Now, as he retreats into silence and paralysis and those calling for him to escalate grow more strident and more fearless, his career could be entering its most dangerous and unpredictable phase yet.
Putin apparently did not get the memo that he is silent and paralyzed. His actions at SPIEF showed tremendous stamina as he delivered multiple substantive addresses, met with various foreign dignitaries and talked in detail about the war in Ukraine and international economic issues.
When journalists like Matthews lie so blatantly to their Western audience about Putin and the status of the war in Ukraine, they are doing the crudest form of propaganda and setting up their readers for an eventual psychological break when the reality sinks in that Putin and Russia are not failing. Putin is not sick, isolated or quivering in fear. You need only watch the video evidence from his various appearances over the last week to appreciate that the West, and specifically Mr. Owen Matthews, are engaged in deliberate fabrications in order to try to shore up flagging support for the anti-Russian campaign. Propagating these kinds of falsehoods makes it more difficult for the West to find a way to extricate itself from its war with Russia. That is dangerous.
Do you think the morons this propaganda is aimed at are even aware SPIEF exists or that burnt out nazi armour is scattered across the fields of Zaporozhye? Either they aren’t, or they’re eager to be reassured by a heavy dose of copium. This is that dose. This propaganda isn’t aimed at you or me, it’s for their consumption. You’ll see more of this as the nazi defeat gains momentum. It’s far from unlikely that if a Russian mass offensive is launched and takes, say, Dnepropetrovsk or Kharkov, the Westernaganda will deny any such thing is happening.
Remember how Kim Jong Un “died on the operating table” several years ago? They never admitted they’d made it up then either.

Larry didn’t need to be charitable. The reference to the 54 tanks that Russia lost (actually about 20 since at least half were salvageable or repairable, unlike Ukie tanks) was very recent. This wasn’t written 2 months ago. Matthews got his start in Moscow in the 1990s when he worked for the Moscow Times. He was part of a small clique of Western journalists and pro-Western Russians (I know some of them), who of course hated Putin from the get-go — and everything that he stood for.

Propaganda can succeed if people are ignorant and the education system is destroyed. This was clearly seen yesterday in the territory of ex-Yugoslavia. Yesterday, the propagandist media in the region bombastically announced that the Ukrainians had occupied the Pyatihatki “inhabited place”, in fact the Russians themselves announced that they had withdrawn. The propagandists said “it is the first recognition by the Russians that the Ukrainians are making progress in the counter-offensive”, “a significant gain for the Ukrainians”, etc. etc. However, for propagandists it was a big problem how to describe Pyatihatki. It is a small village that once had 300 inhabitants, but propagandists used the term “inhabited place”. Reason? In South Slavic languages, the term “inhabited place” indicates a higher level of urbanization than “village”. Some pro-Ukrainian commentators were even getting likes on rigged +/- counters claiming that the Ukrainians had actually captured the eponymous town with 20,000 inhabitants in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The Russians solved their dilemma already in the afternoon when they expelled the Ukrainian militants from Pyatihatki…
The real joke is that Piatykhatky means five houses.
Even bigger joke is that it’s not the smallest place that appeared in the media. North of Bakhmut, there is a “place” called Sakko i Vantsetti, that has been changing hands more than once. It had about one house (that is probably completly flattened by now). It even got Wikipedia page. It says that population in 2001 was 3.

Forgive me for keeping up bringing God into current events, but allow me to share a “real” experience I just had, among a myriad of similar ones I’ve had over my 69 years on earth.

For months and months, I went around shaking my head and wondering why, how could a man who fulfilled more promises than he made to Americans, have been defeated? This caused me a lot of bitterness and a sense that an awful injustice had been done against a good man. I was inconsolable!

Now, allow me to digress and state that one of the items on my prayers, is that God may reveal His secrets hidden from men. And yesterday morning, after almost two and a half years of watching this horror movie unfolding… I think I got the answer why the election went for JB, by means of a black pastor speaking in front of a school board.
He read out of a little book he found in his small granddaughter’s school library, about how a little boy was very sad that he was not a girl, but “lo and behold”, when the caring adults repaired his plumbing, he went out playing and leaping for joy!
Then, the pastor read out of the Book of Romans, chapter 1, which states that “because men refused to obey God and chose instead to do all kinds of despicable and reprehensible things… God “simply” turned them over to do even more vile, despicable and reprehensible things”.
Then it dawned on me, when we see and read in the news the complete opposite of what is happening in Ukraine and the world, when we see the FBI protecting criminals, while arresting the law-abiding, public officials like Nancy Pelosi defending MS 13, allowing them to invade our country, giving them royal treatment, kneeling to rioters, looters and murderers ravaging our neighborhoods, passing laws that allow the mutilation of infants and boys to use girls bathrooms, turning the White House, where DJT used to allow Christians to sing praises to the Lord, into a venue for drag queen shows… that is what God meant by “turning them over to vile behavior”.

Having listened over the years Western journalists interview Putin or ask him questions in various forums, apparent to me that they serve their various states as instigators and anti-Russian propagandists. The whole purpose of Western journalists either in or out of Russia is to make Putin and Russians look bad regardless. Matthews job is to find some angle or make up an angle to this purpose. Same with mainland China now.
The irony of the Matthews article is that it sounds like Putin is not an absolute dictator and is getting the kind of grief one would expect in any functioning Western democracy. Funny that.

Larry, with respect to these idiot journalists and mouth-pieces, why do you and Simplicius put together all your facts, combined data and sources, on the numbers of causalities for both sides and the weaponry and heavy equipment destroyed on both sides and the land “retaken by Ukraine — (I joke – 😂🤣) and put it in the faces of the people doing the idiotic statements and see what reaction it brings.
The information needs to get out there, factual & verified, and this may bring people to their senses.
I continually get sick of the Ukrainian commenters, and we are all entitled to opinions, on LinkedIn and other places where they continually bleat, in the face of undeniable evidence, that Ukraine is winning.
Is this possible?
Nope. Ukrainian commenters do not care about undeniable evidence. They live in a Ghost of Kiev Universe where Russians blow up their own strategic infrastructure, and Bandera is a hero, and Putin is Hitler. They care less about evidence than US courts.
Here’s an example of (il)logical thinking.
a) Both sides agree that this is an artillery war. They agree that most of casualties are caused by shells/rockets/etc.
b) Boths sides also agree that Russians have significant firepower advantage. Depending on source, they fire 5-10 shells/rockets/etc more every single day.
Based on a) and b), basic logic would say that Ukraine should have significantly more dead (maybe 5-10, maybe less, maybe more). Ukraine logic says the opposite. Their official numbers say that Russians have 10 times more dead (about 200,000 vs about 20,000). They are explainig it with:
1) Russians using “human wave tactics”, and
2) Ukrainians being more accurate.
Even if we leave aside how nonsensical claims about banzai charges with shovels are, they go directly against the fact that this is an artillery war. If hundred thousand of Russians soldiers have been mowed down by machine guns, while charging onto them, then this would not be an artillery war.
Accuracy explanation makes as much sense. Half of Ukrainian arsenal is Soviet heritage, and is objectively worse that Russian arsenal that consists of Soviet heritage and bunch of new stuff. The other half of Ukrainian arsenal is western equipment that is somehow better than Soviet/Russian stuff, on paper, written by the producers or maybe Tom Clancy. In reality it is comparable to Russian stuff, except in the ammounts available. For example, both Excalibur and Krasnopol shells are very accurate in theory. In practise, Russians can jam GPS (and they do), and can also produce and fire more of those shells.
Math in USA is not only racist, but it is also Russian propaganda.

I am Owen’s sister. Just to set the record straight on one issue: my mother was, indeed, born in 1934 in Kharkov, when it was part of the Soviet Union, to a Ukrainian mother and a Russian father. However, she always considered herself to be Russian – and we always therefore considered ourselves to be half-Russian (NEVER half Ukrainian!)
As my mother’s mother tongue is Russian (and Russian only) and she feels strongly patriotic towards Russia, I feel obliged to point out that Ukrainian nationalism played no rôle whatsoever in our upbringing!

The US permanent bureaucracy is in a state of panic over BRICS and global de-dollarization. Any method, policy, or aggressive stance will be deemed reasonable and even patriotic so long as it forestalls the inevitable for a few more years. Making Ukraine a forever war is just an attempt to distract and destabilize Russia internally in order to derail BRICS and hopefully fracture the Russian state. I am personally very angry over the waste of human life and literal destruction of the Ukrainian state that is being forced upon the Ukrainian people by the Biden administration.
Hate to disagree (always start with a lie…) But while I smiled at the tactical savvy if this was homegrown, strategically it’s really bad news. In the West it will be sold as Putin was nearly toppled etc etc. and will be sold to the people they are looting as just a few Dollars more.
